  • KROHNE Oil & Gas completes first major Flow Metering System project at Dordrecht facility.

    The project for Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC)’s Al Zour Refinery, which was awarded
    through Saipem/HSS some 15 months ago, includes the supply and installation of six custody transfer
    metering skids, to be installed at an offshore loading terminal. The Al Zour Refinery will account for
    43% of Kuwait’s refining capacity, and will be the largest in the Middle East. It will also be one of the
    largest refineries in the world, when it comes online later on in 2018.
    Each of the 6 skids comprises of three identical metering streams (2x Duty + 1x Standby) or two
    identical metering streams. The metering is based on KROHNE ALTOSONIC III, with master-metering,
    and KROHNE Flow Computer SUMMIT 8800 with KROHNE SynEnergy III supervisory systems.
    The project was a real challenge and KROHNE Oil & Gas managed to complete the tasks within the
    contractual delivery time, resulting in a very satisfied customer.

  • KROHNE Oil & Gas finalised the delivery of 20 large full bore ALTOSONIC 5’s to one of the biggest exporters of crude oil in the Middle East.

    KROHNE Oil & Gas finalised the delivery of 20 large full bore ALTOSONIC 5’s to one of the biggest exporters of crude oil in the Middle East. The diameter ranges varied from 38” to 48” and are used for loading seagoing crude oil carriers. All flowmeters were calibrated at the Euroloop facilities as well as on the water calibration tower of KROHNE Altometer. The performance criteria defined by the customer as 0.15 % were reached, with an API uncertainty of 0.027 % for a flow range of 270 to 15.000 m3/hr (0.1 to 5 m/s).

  • Entrained gas measurement features provide huge operational benefits

    A Colorado energy producer is taking
    advantage of new Coriolis mass

    flowmeter technology that ensures both

    stable and uninterrupted measurements
    of oil with high gas content. Denver-
    based Bonanza Creek Energy is an
    exploration and production company
    focused on extracting oil and associated
    liquids-rich natural gas in the US. The
    company has operations in Colorado’s
    Denver-Julesburg Basin, a major oil and

    gas field that is being actively developed

    through the use of horizontal drilling
    and multi-stage fracture stimulation.

    Bonanza Creek is developing its assets
    in the basin by drilling horizontal lateral
    wells. They needed an accurate and
    reliable way to measure how much oil
    and water each well was producing. Tank
    gauging is the standard method used
    to measure the volume of production
    at each well, and while simple and
    relatively accurate, tank gauging is
    time consuming, costly, and entails
    some safety risks. To account for the
    production variations among the wells
    and provide accurate well allocation
    measurement information, each well on

    a pad had to flow into a separate tank.

    Bonanza Creek was looking for
    a cost effective way to provide an
    accurate oil meter at each wellhead,

    where the oil flows into a separator

    that separates the water, gas, and oil.
    They anticipated there would be gas

    entrained in the fluid coming out of the

    separator, so they needed an option
    that could handle entrained gas.

    The technology

    Gas entrainment refers to the presence

    of gas bubbles in hydrocarbon fluids.

    Entrained gas can disturb the sensitivity

    of mass flow measurement of liquids,

    decrease accuracy, or even stop
    measurement completely. It can occur
    for many reasons, for example due
    to degassing, leaks upstream of or in
    a negative pressure area, excessive
    cavitation and levels falling below
    the minimum in supply containers and
    agitators in tanks, or long drop distances
    for media into tanks. Entrainment can
    also occur due to status transitions in
    process control, such as when starting,
    shutting down, or cleaning the system.

    Knowing that Bonanza Creek was

    seeking an accurate oil meter that
    could handle gas entrainment, Bob
    Phagan, sales engineer for I.C.S. Sales,
    arranged a demonstration of a new

    mass flowmeter device that is “gas

    bubble resistant.” I.C.S. Sales is one of the
    leading manufacturers’ representatives
    in the Rocky Mountain Region,
    specialising in process instrumentation.

    The new meter, the Optimass Coriolis

    mass flowmeter developed by Krohne,

    offers reliable indication of gas bubbles
    in a process by using a combination
    of various measurements to detect a

    two-phase flow. The meter detects and

    signals gas entrainment reliably and
    maintains the active measurement
    in all measuring conditions with gas
    content from 0 to 100% by volume. The
    measuring sensor and signal converter
    were designed to offer complete
    digital signal processing, from the
    production of the drive oscillation of
    the measuring tube to the evaluation of
    the sensor signals. The meter maintains
    continuous mass density measurement
    and provides measured values at all
    times. At the same time, it can report
    the two-phase status and output a

    preconfigured alarm, in accordance

    with NAMUR NE 107 requirements.

    “We knew the new technology would
    be the best way for them to handle
    entrained gas in this application, and
    the demonstration showed them
    clearly how the meter could help,”
    says Phagan. He explains that for this
    application, the Optimass meters are
    installed on the crude oil leg of the oil/
    water/gas separator. Less expensive
    metering technology is used to meter
    the water, since it is of lower value
    to investors. Gas is metered using
    differential pressure (DP) devices.

    Results speak for themselves

    After purchasing the first 30 meters in

    2013, Bonanza Creek compared the
    tank volume versus the metered volume
    over a 24-hour period and found only
    minor differences in the measured
    values. These minor differences in
    the measured volumes were due to
    a phenomenon known as shrinkage.
    The company has since installed more
    than 400 Optimass meters. Bonanza
    Creek can now accurately manage
    wellhead allocation and provide
    stakeholders critical production data.

    The model used depends upon the
    required accuracy. Private leases
    use the Optimass 1400, which offers a
    published accuracy of 0.15%, while the
    Optimass 6400 model is used for Federal
    Bureau of Land Management leases,
    with a published accuracy of 0.10%.
    The Optimass 6400 has been approved
    for custody transfers of both liquids
    and gases, making it ideal for process
    industries and specialist applications like
    liquefied natural gas (LNG), compressed
    natural gas (CNG), or supercritical gases
    in terminal or storage/bunkering, along
    with custody transfer applications.

    The meter is the first Coriolis mass
    flowmeter in the world to feature
    advanced entrained gas management
    (EGM), with no loss of measurement
    with gas entrainment up to 100% of
    volume. Unlike other mass flowmeters,
    where relative movement between gas
    and fluid dampens the amplitude of
    the measuring tube and interferes with
    the electronics’ capability to determine
    the actual resonant frequency, the
    Optimass models with EGM can follow
    and correct for the varying amplitudes.
    EGM continues to present an actual
    measured reading, together with an
    indication or configurable alarm that

    improves processes by identifying
    transient gas entrainments.

    “Bonanza Creek has found the meters
    to be rugged and durable and the
    price compared to other options is a

    great benefit to them,” says Phagan.

    “They have also found entrained
    gas management to be another

    huge benefit to their operations.”

    The new meters are now being
    used at other exploration and
    production companies working in the
    Wattenberg Fields. After a head-to-head
    demonstration and evaluation comparing
    Optimass meters to a competitor meter
    without EGM, one major energy company
    purchased and installed about 180

    Optimass meters in 2015, and at the

    time of writing had scheduled another
    purchase of at least 60 more for 2016.

    Magnetic resonance makes use of a fundamental property of atoms and in effect makes it possible to “count” hydrogen atoms. Since oil, gas and water all contain hydrogen atoms, multiphase flow can be measured using magnetic resonance. For this purpose the fluids are magnetised and subsequently excited by radio frequency pulses. The hydrogen atoms respond to the pulses and send back echoes which are recorded. The amplitude of the echoes and the rate at which they decay is used to calculate the flow rates. The difference in magnetic resonance properties allows making a distinction between the flowrates of oil, gas and water.

    Duisburg, January 25, 2018: The MFC 400 signal converter is now available with PROFINET I/O option. Hereby, all OPTIMASS x400 coriolis mass flowmeters (compact and field versions) can be equipped with Industrial Ethernet communication, complementing the existing HART 7, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, PROFIBUS PA and DP as well as Modbus communication options.

    With PROFINET I/O, all measuring, process and diagnostic information from the meters is available real-time via a single communication channel, allowing for convenient integration of new meters: the MFC 400 supports network functions such as Auto-Negotiation, Auto Crossover, Auto Polarity and Network diagnostics, and is is automatically added to the communication path topology when connected to the network. It also supports Media Redundancy Protocol: in the event of a line or device failure the MFC 400 instantly switches to an alternative communication path when installed in supporting topologies. A web server is not required, standard functions such as zero flow calibration or counter reset can be performed directly.

    One or two M12 (D coded) connectors allow installation in all topologies with data transfer speeds of up to 100 MBps. An additional external switch is not required as it features an integrated managed Ethernet switch, providing additional functionality including diagnostics: conforming to the NAMUR standard NE 107 for status and error handling, the MFC 400 provides extensive self-checking of internal circuits and information regarding the health of the measuring sensor as well as information about current process conditions, e.g. indication of 2-phase flows, density or temperature.

    Denver-based Bonanza Creek Energy, Inc. is an exploration and production company focused on extracting oil and associated liquids-rich natural gas in Colorado's Denver-Julesburg Basin. The company required an accurate and reliable way to measure how much oil and water each well was producing. Tank gauging is the standard method for these challenging applications, but while simple and relatively accurate, it is time consuming, costly, and entails some safety risks. Bonanza Creek was looking for a cost effective alternative way to provide an accurate oil meter at each wellhead, where the oil flows into a separator that separates the water, gas, and oil. They anticipated there would be gas entrained in the fluid coming out of the separator, so they needed an option that could handle entrained gas.

    Duisburg, September 18, 2017: KROHNE introduces new large line sizes as standard for its OPTIMASS series: for OPTIMASS 6400, diameters DN150/ 6" and DN200/ 8" have been added, and OPTIMASS 2400 is now available up to DN400/ 16".

    Targeted at the oil & gas and petrochemical industries, typical applications for the new large line sizes include bulk hydrocarbon loading and bunkering, LNG/cryogenic or high temperature applications. They feature gas and liquid MID and OIML custody transfer approvals and compliance with API and AGA guidelines, SIL 2/3 functionality and NE 107 diagnostic functions.

    While OPTIMASS 6400 DN150/ 6" and DN200/ 8" share the dual bent tube design of their smaller sizes, the OPTIMASS 2400 DN400/ 16" is a completely new design: the well-known dual straight tube has been extended to a four straight tube design for flow rates up to 4,600 t/h / 169,021 lb/min, making it the highest capacity Coriolis flowmeter on the market. Available in both Duplex and Super Duplex, it maintains the benefits of the straight tube design: low pressure loss, small installation envelope, support on the meter body, secondary containment, and immunity to crosstalk between meters installed in the same line. Accuracy is 0.1 % with a turndown of 20:1 and an optional 0.05 % “flat” accuracy with a turndown of 10:1. OPTIMASS 2400 is suitable for field proving with small volume prover, in-situ calibration verification and documentation with OPTICHECK verification tool is also possible.

    The new large line sizes also feature Entrained Gas Management EGM, offering continuous and repeatable mass flow or density measurement over a wide range of gas fractions and complex flow conditions. The meters indicate and maintain operation with 2-phase flows such as liquids mixed with gas, slurries with gases or highly viscous fluids with gas entrainments.

    Duisburg, June 6, 2017: KROHNE adds six new 24 and 80 GHz transmitters to their OPTIWAVE series of FMCW radar level transmitters. They aim at liquid and solid applications in a wide range of industries. Based on over 28 years of experience with FMCW technology, each device has a particular target area of application, for example agitated and corrosive liquids, narrow tanks with internal obstructions, or powders and dusty atmospheres.

    All new OPTIWAVE devices feature 2-wire 4…20mA HART 7 communication and come with an extensive choice of process connections, starting from ¾". They feature a large backlit LCD display with 4-button keypad, a quick setup assistant for easy commissioning, and come with free PACTware™ DTM with full functionality. While approvals for hazardous areas are already available, other approvals including SIL are ongoing.

    New devices for liquids: OPTIWAVE 3500, 5400, 7400 and 7500
    OPTIWAVE 3500 is a 80 GHz FMCW radar aimed at hygienic applications in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical markets. It has a wide range of hygienic connections and can measure right up to the process connection. Thanks to its narrow beam angle and small dead zone, it is capable of measuring in small and narrow tanks, even with agitators.

    OPTIWAVE 5400 is a 24 GHz FMCW radar for liquids in basic process applications in chemical, oil & gas and power industries. It provides accurate readings in closed tanks, in open air applications such as rivers or dams, and this even in processes with fast changing levels.

    OPTIWAVE 7400 is a 24 GHz FMCW radar designed for liquids in harsh environments such as tanks with agitators containing corrosives or in non-Ex applications up to +700°C / +1292°F (e.g. molten salt in solar plants). Aimed at the chemical, petrochemical, power and oil and gas industries, it comes with a large choice of antenna options like the proven Drop antenna as well as heating, cooling or purging systems for metallic Horn antennas. For applications with corrosive or dangerous liquids, a flange plate protection or a Metaglas second sealing barrier are available. The quick coupling system permits the removal of the converter under process conditions.

    OPTIWAVE 7500 is a 80 GHz FMCW radar covering the same industries as OPTIWAVE 7400 up to +150°C / +302°F, 40 barg / 580 psig. With its small beam angle and negliglible dead zone, it is aimed at liquid applications in small and narrow tanks with internal obstructions like agitators or heating coils, as well as tanks with long nozzles. This 80 GHz radar can even measure through tank roofs made of non-conductive material. It features a flush-mounted PEEK Lens antenna and measures the level of a product from the antenna down to the tank bottom over a distance of 100 m / 328 ft.

    New devices for solids: OPTIWAVE 6400 and 6500
    OPTIWAVE 6400 is a 24 GHz FMCW radar for solids from granulates to rocks in industries such as minerals and mining, chemical, agriculture, or power generation. It measures the level of solids such as stone, plastic granulates or coffee beans accurately and reliably. The proven Drop antenna minimises scaling and is unaffected by the angle of repose, thus eliminating the need for expensive antenna aiming kits or purging systems.

    OPTIWAVE 6500 is a 80 GHz FMCW radar for powders and dusty atmospheres, aiming at the same industries as OPTIWAVE 6400. It features specific algorithms and high signal dynamics to provide reliable and accurate readings despite the challenges linked to fine powders such as dust, low-reflective media, build-up and uneven surfaces. Thanks to the small beam angle of the flush-mounted Lens antenna, it is best suited for high and narrow silos even in the presence of internal obstructions.

    The new 24 GHz and 80 GHz transmitters complement the two existing 6 and 10 GHz devices of the OPTIWAVE series: OPTIWAVE 1010 is a 6 GHz FMCW radar suited for clean liquids in bypass chambers and Magnetic Level Indicators (MLI). It is welded to the bypass chamber or MLI and measures the position of the float or the liquid level. OPTIWAVE 5200 is a 10 GHz FMCW radar for liquids in storage and simple process applications with a wide range of options, SIL2 approval and a choice of fieldbus communication options.

    Duisburg, October 18, 2016: Entrained Gas Management EGM technology is now available for all KROHNE OPTIMASS Coriolis mass flowmeters. With the latest additions OPTIMASS 3400 and OPTIMASS 7400, now the whole OPTIMASS series offers continuous and repeatable mass flow or density measurement with 2-phase flows such as liquids mixed with gas, slurries with gases or highly viscous fluids with gas entrainments.

    In the past, this presented a huge challenge for mass flowmeters: without gas entrainments, the measuring tubes in the Coriolis mass flowmeter have the desired regular oscillation. Gas entrained in the liquid dampens this regular oscillation, and as the gas content increases, it can come to a complete stop. To overcome this, KROHNE developed powerful control algorithms that allow the meter to maintain oscillation and continue to measure even with complex flow conditions. This is possible even during a complete transition from a pure liquid phase to a gas phase and back, i.e. from 0…100% gas content. Mass flow and density measurements remain stable, continuous and repeatable.

    Since the introduction of the EGM technology in 2012, OPTIMASS flowmeters with EGM have proven themselves in 2-phase flow and batch/loading/empty-full-empty applications in various industries:

    • Food & Beverage: raw milk, ice cream, dough, sirup, tomato concentrate, spinach, meat, margarine, mayonnaise, meat, syrup, coffee extract, coolants, sugar concentrates and molasses
    • Chemical: hydrogen peroxide processing, viscous monomers/polymers, liquid removal from stirred tanks, highly concentrated assets such as fuming HCl or HNO3, polyurethane foams, push to empty tanks
    • Oil & Gas: drilling fluids, truck loading/offloading, well heads, tank management

    Together with the indication or configurable alarm for the user, EGM can also be used to improve processes by identifying transient gas entrainments.

    To explain the technology and the applications in more detail, “Entrained Gas Management in Coriolis flowmeters” has been released as new course on the free KROHNE Academy online eLearning platform https://academy-online.krohne.com. The course consists of one learning module with a corresponding test that allows participants to assess their knowledge, and is currently available in English and German, other languages will follow.
