  • Concrete Walled Bund, Floor Upgrade reusing contaminated material as backfill

    A UK Terminal Operator of Above Ground Storage Tanks recently upgraded one of its large bunds using the Rawmat HDB and Rawdrain system as the COMAH Compliant secondary containment lining. The Rawmat HDB provides a flexible but impermeable lining to the floors of the concrete walled bunds . The existing bund floors were stripped, the as dug material crushed to a 6F4 specification, the Rawmat and Rawdrain laid, fixed to the bund walls and the tank bases then the contaminated material was re-used as a confining layer over the Rawmat membrane. The Rawdrain performed the duel function of acting as protection layer over the Rawmat whilst enabling the faster flow of the rainwater to the sumps within the bund. The membrane was installed as part of a major upgrading works on all of the Operators sites, the system provides a simple to install but highly cost effective solution to achieve COMAH compliance whilst retaining the majority of the contaminated material on site.

  • UK Terminal Operator use Rawmat HDB for COMAH Compliant bund upgrades across UK

The Rawmat HDB provides a flexible but impermeable lining to the floors of the concrete walled bunds (and under a number of the tanks). The existing bund floors were stripped, the Rawmat laid, fixed to the bund walls and the tank bases then the contaminated material re-used as a confining layer over the Rawmat membrane. The membrane was installed as part of a major upgrading works on all of the sites, the system provides a simple to install but highly cost effective solution to achieve COMAH compliance whilst retaining the majority of the contaminated material on site.

  • Rawmat continues to be the secondary containment liner of choice for COMAH Compliance

    Rawmat HDB is being installed on an upgrade/new build of a Above Ground Storage Tank facility in the south of England. This project is phase 2 of long term upgrade where old tanks have been removed and replaced on the old bases with COMAH compliant containment. The main project contraction of 2 new tanks is well advanced with the Rawmat HDB and Rawdrain system employed to provide an impermeable barrier to the floor of the bund which has a concrete wall newly constructed around the tanks. Each tank is isolated from the others by its method of lining such that individual tank leak detection can be achieved.

  • Terminal Upgrade, Middlesex, UK - Rawmat HDB secondary containment lining system

    This terminal is a COMAH Tier One site strategically located near Heathrow Airport with close road access to M25 on 33 acres of land. It serves a large tributary area from Milton Keynes to the north; as far as Brighton on the south coast, Swindon to the west, and much of London. The terminal is connected to the UK’s largest refinery via a proprietary pipeline. The terminal has 17 tanks in service with a combined overall capacity of approximately 100,000 cbm and stores Mogas, Super Unleaded, Diesel and Gasoil as well as bio-mogas and has modern Ethanol injection facilities to provide a range of biofuels. The site has undergone extensive upgrades over the last 5-6 years including the secondary containment lining of 3 bunds with the Rawmat HDB membrane over this period, the fourth and final bund upgrade on the site is currently underway. The previous 3 bunds were Concrete walled bunds where the Rawmat HDB membrane and Rawdrain system formed the new impermeable base to the bund floors. The final phase of the works involves the lining of earth banks which form the bund walls. The design on this phase, carried out by Atkins Global, involves the installation of the Rawmat HDB to the bund floor and the sloped earth bund walls which are reinforced by the incorporation of the Rawgrid locked in place by pins cast into a trench at the top of the slope, the Rawcell containment system is then tied to the Rawgrid and the apertures of the cell infilled with a 150mm deep layer of concrete which has a float finish. Across the bund floor the Rawmat HDB is laid onto the excavated formation, the polymer prehydrated nature of the Rawmat HDB’s sodium bentonite core means that the contaminated formation will not impact on the performance of the membrane. The membrane is being backfilled with the as-dug material removed from the base of the bund during the enabling works. This project, like the previous three is being undertaken by contractors Trant Engineering Ltd.

  • Stolthaven UK upgrades bund floor with Rawmat HDB secondary containment lining membrane

    Stotlhaven Terminal in Dagenham is a COMAH top tier bulk liquid storage terminal located on the River Thames, 15 miles from Central London. The site stores Chemicals, Petroleum products, Vegetable oils, Solvents, Base oils, Fertilizers. The site is currently undergoing extensive upgrading including the re-organisation and rationalisation of its Area 3 bund. As part of the works the floor and walls of the bund are being brought up to COMAH Tier One standards. This involves the secondary containment lining of the bund floor using the Rawmat HDB Type PJ1 membrane. The policy of Stolt-Neilsen is to have concrete floors to their bunds, however the low level of the pipes and complexity of the bund layout meant construction of a concrete bund floor to meet BSEN 1992-3:2006 and Euro Code 2 EN 1992-3 Part 3: Liquid Retaining Structures would be extremely difficult. The solution chosen by Stolt-Neilsen and their designers BC&T Engineers was to use the Rawmat HDB membrane to provide the impermeability to the bund floor and use 150mm thick C40 fibre reinforced concrete as the confinement material over the membrane. The concrete thereby providing the finished floor surface required for the project. The Rawmat HDB is laid onto the excavated formation, the polymer prehydrated nature of the Rawmat HDB’s sodium bentonite core meant that the contaminated formation would not impact on the performance of the membrane. The project has created many challenges for the contractors Trant Engineering Ltd, particularly the many different levels of the tanks and pipelines and maintaining continuity.
