  • Earth-Rite Static grounding systems from Newson Gale.

    The Earth-Rite series of hazardous area static grounding systems from Newson Gale incorporate many innovative and practical features which advance safety, reliability and ease of use ensuring static electricity does not pose an ignition risk in flammable gas, liquid vapour or combustible dust atmospheres.

    The systems feature a cluster of bright pulsing green LEDs which provide attention grabbing indication to personnel that a positive ground condition is established for the duration of the transfer process. The system electronics, which are housed in a IIC EX(d) enclosure as standard, have a certified operating temperature range of -40°C to + 55°C which means the new systems can be installed in the harshest operating environmental conditions without any additional protection of modification.

    In the world-wide chemical and process industries, Earth-Rite® static grounding systems are a well established key protocol for preventing fires and explosions occurring from electrostatic (spark) discharges during the transfer, processing and handling of flammable or combustible liquids, gases and powders. The upgraded and enhanced features of the new Earth-Rite® RTR™ and Earth-Rite® PLUS models herald the first wave of a radical advancement in static grounding technology designed to provide the user with multiple benefits in operation, safety and maintenance.

    Designed specifically for minimising the hazards of static ignitions during Road Tanker Truck loading and unloading, the patented Earth-Rite® RTR™ provides operators with automatic and failsafe static ground verification and tanker truck recognition checks, ensuring product transfers cannot take place unless these parameters are tested and verified. The Earth-Rite® PLUS provides protection for all conductive (metal) items, including drums, vessels, IBCs, mobile tanks and railcars. In addition, both systems include a pair of voltage free contacts that engage only when the resistance to ground is tested and verified to be less than 10 ohms, a feature which enables customers and specifiers demonstrate compliance with globally recognised standards for static control, including Cenelec CLC/TR: 50404 and NFPA 77.

    Both systems are certified to IECEx and ATEX standards for installation and use in all common hazardous areas, including the very highest gas group approvals (EEx d (ia) IIC T6). Power supply units may be selected from 220/240V AC or 110/120V AC and are suitable for operating temperatures ranging from – 40 deg C to + 55 deg C. The Earth-Rite® RTR™ and Earth-Rite® PLUS have been assessed for functional safety and received a SIL 2 rating according to IEC 61508.

    All units are compact and easy to install and maintain, and are shipped complete with a detailed installation manual together with optional installer’s kit containing cable glands, wiring and other useful items, while on-board diagnostic “self-checking” electronics makes initial set-up and commission straightforward. The Intrinsically Safe Ground Connection Junction Box, together with “Quick Connect” feature on the cable and clamp enhances safety and simplifies on-going maintenance in hazardous areas.

  • The OhmGuard Hose Continuity Tester.

    The OhmGuard Hose Continuity Tester.

    New easy to use hose continuity tester ensures hoses do not pose an electrostatic ignition risk in potentially combustible atmospheres.

    During hazardous area tank cleaning, spill recovery and product delivery operations vacuum trucks and bulk road tanker trucks are regularly exposed to the ignition hazards of static electricity. While it is vitally important to ground the vehicles used in the transfer operation, it is also important to ensure the hoses used to transfer product into, or out of, the vehicle cannot accumulate static electricity. Electrically isolated metal components, like hose couplings and wire helixes, have the potential to accumulate enough static electricity to discharge a high energy spark into a combustible atmosphere.

    The OhmGuard Hose Continuity Tester, manufactured by Newson Gale, is a device designed to ensure that a string of assembled hoses have good electrical continuity with a grounded truck. Good continuity with the grounded truck ensures that electrostatic charges cannot accumulate on the metal components of the hoses being used in the transfer operation.

    The OhmGuard is an easy to use device that operates on the principal of a “PASS or FAIL” test procedure. To operate the device, the driver will first ground the truck and then assemble the required number of hose sections to the truck. The driver will then connect the OhmGuard clamp to the free coupling or nozzle of the last hose (see illustration). If the electrical resistance through the string of hoses to the grounded truck is “good”, a green LED mounted in the OhmGuard clamp will pulse continuously informing the driver that the hoses are bonded to the truck and are safe to use. If there is a break in continuity, the LED will not pulse and the driver may carry out a quick visual inspection of the hoses to ensure parts like wire helixes have not suffered broken connections with components like end couplings. The driver may also elect to test each hose individually.

    The OhmGuard carries cCSAus, ATEX and IECEx approvals for operation in the highest combustible gas, vapour and dust atmospheres.

  • Earth-Rite MULTIPOINT II

    New innovation lowers the total cost of ownership for customers that require active static grounding protection.

    Newson Gale’s Earth-Rite MULTIPOINT II is the new innovation which will provide customers with a unique value proposition that makes the active static grounding of multiple items of equipment with interlock control more cost effective than other options available to the EX/HAZLOC industries.

    Newson Gale’s new Earth-Rite MULTIPOINT II is an ATEX / IECEx / CSA certified static grounding system that enables customers actively monitor up to eight (8) discrete items of equipment at risk of discharging electrostatic sparks into flammable or combustible dust atmospheres. Whereas multiple items of equipment used in EX/HAZLOC operations require an individual grounding system to monitor each item of equipment, the Earth-Rite MULTIPOINT II is a single system that actively monitors the grounding status of eight (8) items ranging from railcars to powder processing equipment. This new innovation from Newson Gale provides customers with a unique value proposition that reduces total purchase and installation costs for projects where multiple items of equipment require static grounding protection.

    The Earth-Rite MULTIPOINT II consists of a monitoring control unit that features an array of red and green LED indicators that verify when the equipment in need of static grounding protection has a resistance to a verified true earth grounding point of 10 ohms* or less. In addition to the LED indicators located in the monitoring control unit, equipment operators can refer to independent remote indicator stations that can be mounted closer to the process hazard. Each indicator station provides operators with a visual “GO / NO GO” reference that informs them when the resistance in the static grounding circuit is low enough (less than 10 ohms) to proceed with the operation. As the remote indicator stations are powered by the monitoring control unit’s intrinsically safe circuits power from external sources like 230 / 110 V AC supplies, that would be needed for more expensive Ex(d)/Ex(e) certified indicator stations, are not required.

    The Earth-Rite MULTIPOINT II’s power supply houses eight (8) volt free contacts, each of which is controlled by the corresponding monitoring channel in the monitoring control unit. In addition to the grounding circuit relays, a group relay can be selected to control external equipment that requires a 0 to 10 ohm permissive condition from several monitored channels. A fault relay is also provided so that interlocked processes can be shut down in a fail-safe mode should the system’s self-monitoring function detect if the permissive resistance range of the grounding circuits rise above 10 ohms or if a fault is detected with the micro-controller’s software.

    The monitoring control unit and remote indicator stations are ATEX / IECEx certified for installation in Zone 0 / Zone 20 atmospheres and cCSAus approved for installation in Class I, Div. 1; Class II, Div. 1 and Class III atmospheres. The power supply is ATEX / IECEx certified for installation in Zone 2 / Zone 21 atmospheres and cCSAus approved for installation in Class I, Div. 2; Class II, Div. 1 and Class III atmospheres. (SIL 2 pending).

    *10 ohms represents the maximum resistance level that international guidelines like Cenelec CLC/TR 60079-32-1 and NFPA 77 recommend for static grounding circuits.
