  • BELGIAN FREEZING AND COOLING INDUSTRY - A REFRESHING VIEW ON LOGISTICS

Expertise in logistics. This is what the Belgian Cooling and Freezing Industry (BVBVK) stands for and what the sector pursues. Result: each day hundreds of thousands of deep-frozen products and other foodstuffs are stored and transported in a highly professional manner. Their know-how ensures that this gigantic operation takes place successfully day in day out.
We have done an interview with one of the BVBVK members , Luc Put - CEO of Colfridis, to demonstrate the professionalism of the Belgian Belgian Cooling and Freezing Industry.

YOU ATTACH GREAT IMPORTANCE TO SERVICE. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS?

Luc Put, CEO Colfridis: “We assume that each customer is different. This is why we match our service to the needs of each individual customer. We provide a specific solution based on each specific request. We go to great lengths to make sure of this. ‘No’ is not a word in our dictionary. Our starting point is always: how can we realise what our customer wants?”

HOW DO YOU PUT THE CUSTOMER-ORIENTED APPROACH INTO PRACTICE?

LP: “We have a strong staff of some 700 employees. They are people who know the logistics business through and through and have a certain professional pride. They keep a very close eye on the quality of the products stored in our warehouse. The ideal temperature for deep-frozen products, the best storage conditions for bananas or the careful handling of eggs; our customers can rest assured when it comes to such matters. That is some- thing we make sure of.”

THE LOGISTICS SECTOR MUST HAVE FAR-REACHING FLEXIBILITY. HOW DO YOU SCORE HERE?

LP: “It is indeed our flexibility and efficiency that allow us to make the difference. Our operations run 24 hours a day. This gives the advantage that we can quickly respond to the needs of our customers, while also ensuring optimum staffing to be able to offer competitive prices. Another aspect with which we can make the difference is our IT system. It is designed on the basis of the needs of our user. It is particularly the flexible and customer-oriented way of thinking that gives us such a high score.”
“A story of growth Colfridis has enjoyed a turnover increase of 22% in the past five years. ”
YOU HAVE GROWN STRONGLY IN RECENT YEARS. HAVE YOU REACHED THE CEILING?

LP: “We are determined to continue to grow further. How are we going to do that? By continuing to excel in our logistical expertise. And by further refining our IT processes. We will also be grasping new opportunities with both hands. Another aspect that comes to mind is the e-commerce activities where we take care of the logistical process behind online shopping. We are al- ready doing this for one customer today, and it is a market in which we want to grow.”

WHICH PATH DO YOU WANT TO FOLLOW IN THE FUTURE?

LP: “You can summarise our ambitions for the future as ‘Lean
& Green’. We will also be going flat-out for even more efficiency along with a smaller impact on the environment. An impossible combination? Not at all. Look at our drivers, who, thanks to eco-driving, are producing fewer CO2 emissions while also cut- ting fuel costs. This is another example of the logistical expertise with which we want to continue to make the difference for our customers in the future.”

  • “BELGIUM, AN IDEAL HUB FOR PACKAGING, STORAGE AND LOGISTICS FOR DEEP-FROZEN PRODUCTS”

Are you in search of a Belgian or European hub for the packaging and storage of fresh and deep-frozen products? Belgium has the latest technologies in-house to stay ahead of the pack as regards quality and range of services.

LET US GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE

In Dendermonde, not far from the Port of Antwerp and in the Brussels-Ghent-Antwerp triangle, we had an interview with Stijn Siongers of Sivafrost. Sivafrost handles-of fresh and deep-frozen products. “Here you can find multiple warehouses for storage between 0 and 4 C°, between 12 and 18 C° and deep-frozen products at -18 or -25 C°. This together accounts for 18,000 europallets,” says Stijn Siongers of Sivafrost.

    CO-PACKING FOR FROZEN FOOD

Sivafrost packs and repacks products on two fully automatic and two semi-automatic packing lines. On our fully automatic lines we work with packages between 50g and 5 kg in the standard bags as found in the shop. Our range also includes upright bags with or without zip closure. Our lines give us the capacity to pack almost 200 tonnes a day. Combinations of automatic and manual packaging are also among the options.

A HUB FOR BELGIUM AND EUROPE

Sivafrost’s main customers include large companies from the chocolate, baking and potato sector. We pack according to the requirements of the (retail)customers and store products up to the time of supply to the market. We also take care of clearing customs formalities along with quality controls and certificates.

    ADDED VALUE IN TRANSFORMATION

Further to our logistical activities we are continually looking to provide added value for our customers. We achieve this not only in transforming the packaging, but also with freezing and defrosting processes. With an extended shelf life these processes offer opportunities to our customers to export to areas previously beyond their reach.

    A QUALITY-CONSCIOUS ‘GREEN’ FAMILY BUSINESS

With almost 30 years of experience Sivafrost has all the necessary quality certificates in its possession. “Everything is con- trolled by ERP software,” says Stijn Siongers. “This enables us to guarantee perfect traceability with the coding of bags, boxes and pallets.” The icing on the cake? The green nature of Siva- frost: almost 80% of the energy is sustainable from our own solar panels and wind energy.

    INVESTING IN INNOVATION

Healthy growth of an average of 5 to 10 per cent is required to maintain the qualities of a family business such as Siva- frost. “This is why we are continuously innovating,” says Stijn Siongers. “We were the first in Belgium to use RFID for storage for third parties. And we were the first to draw up an HACCP plan in our sector. In 2015 we will be preparing for the future by completing our next major extension fully in line with this philosophy.

  • “YOUR GOODS, STRAIGHT FROM THE SHIP INTO OUR STORAGE SPACE”

With large areas of cooling and freezer space and an excellent access to Europe via the Port of Ghent, Belgium is an attractive gateway for importers of deep-frozen or fresh products. “The products go straight from the ship into our freezers or cold stores, ready for further transport to wherever the customer wishes”, says founder and business manager Pascal Braecke.

Excellently equipped for the loading and unloading

Mipa Frost grew out of Braecke Trading, a company trading in potatoes and other vegetables. Pascal Braecke explains more: “We have 4,000 pallet spaces in Bavikhove, while in the port at Ghent we have a further 75,000 m³ of storage space available. We have both deep-freeze and refrigerated zones at temperatures of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. In the port at Ghent we are also excellently equipped for the loading and unloading of reefer containers. When required we also assist our customers with customs formalities and any necessary prior and further transport.”

    High investements

In 2015 Mipa Frost will be investing heavily in an automated warehouse management system with remote stock monitoring. “We mainly store fresh vegetables, butter products, deep-frozen fries, potato products and deep-frozen meat. Besides potato and other vegetables producers in Belgium, we are also strongly targeting import companies.”

  • BELGIUM, THE TOTAL LOGISTICS PARTNER FOR TEMPERATURE-CONTROLLED PRODUCTS

The perfect approach for all food that must be stored at controlled temperatures: that’s what you’ll find at Stockhabo and Devagel. Under the leadership of Xavier Haspeslagh, this company from Moeskroen very quickly grew to become a faultless partner for ‘dry storage’ and the storage of deep-frozen and cooled foods.

    WHAT EXACTLY DOES STOCKHABO DO?

Xavier Haspeslagh: “In 2001 we started operating on a relatively small scale with deep-frozen storage with 8,000 pallet spaces, mainly for chicken slaughterhouses and the deep-frozen industry. Today we serve just about all niches in the food industry where totally reliable storage at a controlled temperature is a crucial requirement. Besides our enormous capacity of pallet spaces (now 63,500) we also possess separate units for chocolate, shock freezing and tempering.”

HOW DOES STOCKHABO MAKE THE DIFFERENCE?

“Together with our sister company Devagel we guarantee minimal waiting times because all our loading bays are conditioned at a temperature of -18 °C and we can prepare up to 30 full loads. We also have an extremely high performing WMS and voice picking system for perfect control of data traffic. As regards accreditation we also possess the BRC, BI-BPD and HACCP automatic control certificates. We have also always operated with great flexibility to meet the demands of our customers: on their request we have considerably increased our storage volume along with significant flexibility regarding opening hours. We also operate as a customs warehouse, and for important customers all data traffic can be automatically managed by ETC.”

BVBVK Member “Barias” from Roeselare guarantees foreign food producers exporting to Europe a unique and complete service for the flexible packaging, storage and delivery of their deep-frozen or refrigerated goods. “We deliver goods just-in-time to retailers or food services in the required consumer packaging”, explains business manager Chris Mullie.

HIGH ADDED VALUE TO IMPORTERS AND FOOD PRODUCERS

Barias is a solid concern offering a high added value to importers and food producers. Chris Mullie: “We receive the goods in bulk by container or trailer and store them in the right conditioned environment fully in line with the most stringent standards. We specialize in potato products, bakery products, vegetables, meat and fish.”

    FLEXIBLE PACKAGING

Barias automatically or manually packages these goods in the appropriate packaging depending on the requirements of the end customer. “Practically any type of packaging is possible”, explains Chris Mullie. “For retailer A a cardboard box in a blue colour and for retailer B the same product in a bag with a yellow colour? No problem at all! We possess a great diversity of packaging ma- chines. Both small and large volumes can be processed. Our customers place their orders themselves, or we receive them directly from the retailers or the food services. Anything is possible. The customer never remains with unsold stock and peak periods are simply taken care of. We package tailor-made and just-in-time depending on the orders arriving.”

    THE CUSTOMER DECIDES

The food producers or importers decide which of Barias’ services they wish to use. “We offer a full menu from which the customer is free to choose. We can design the packaging, have it manufactured and taken into stock, or the customer may provide the packaging himself. We can deliver the products or the customer may work with his own transporter. We can also provide the necessary sup- port for administrative management and any return shipments. Each customer works together with one and the same contact per- son at Barias for the full monitoring of his operations.”

    LOCATION

Thanks to the proximity of seaports in Zeebrugge, Antwerp and Calais/Dunkirk and the numerous good connections by road, Barias is an excellent operating base for France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom.

  • BELGIUM WAREHOUSES WHERE COOL IS ALSO COOL, ALSO FOR BULK STORAGE.

Are you in need of a modern storage place where your food products can be stored at the right temperature and with the necessary care? Welcome to Frigo Fernelmont. The modern cooling and freezing house with more than 100,000 cubic meters of storage space and more than 15 years of experience. We interviewed Tom Foriers, business manager at Frigo Fernelmont.

YOU POSSESS A GIGANTIC STORAGE SPACE. HOW DO YOU ACQUIRE. 100,000 CUBIC METRES OF USABLE STORAGE SPACE?

Tom Foriers, business manager at Frigo Fernelmont: “We offer bulk storage. We store large bulks of fresh foodstuffs in cubic boxes in cold storage spaces at a positive temperature. We neatly stack pallets or vessels in our deep-freeze units. We thereby utilize our available space as efficiently as possible. Another advantage of this method of storage is that we can carry out all operations with a fork- lift truck. This saves us a great deal of time and costs.”

YOUR CUSTOMERS SUPPLY DIFFERENT KINDS OF FOOD PRODUCTS. THAT ASSUMES DIFFERENT STORAGE PRO- CEDURES. HOW DO YOU DO THAT?

TF: “We know from experience what type of storage works best for what product. For example, you can store chicory at high quality for a whole year at -2 °C if you provide some extra moisture in the storage space. It is this type of knowledge that enables us to make the difference for our customers. And then there is our follow-up. The foodstuffs stored here are closely monitored. The peace of mind of our customers is also included in our services.”
