  • Euskadi throws the first floating laboratory in Europe

The laboratory is intended for companies that provide solutions in offshore energy markets such as Erreka, Credeblug, Ditrel Industrial, Glual, Hine, Navacel, Nem Solutions, Sasyma Coatings, Tubacex or Vicinay, which will be the first to test their systems in the new facilities.

Although the laboratory was originally designed to boost offshore energy, other sectors, such as the naval, civil works, fishing, communications, and sports will be able to take advantage of this infrastructure. We also hope it can be used to train professionals.

The Basque technological research and development center, Tecnalia, has launched the first floating laboratory in Europe for testing in a real offshore marine environment in Bermeo. The installation, a kind of large buoy, allows testing new materials and solutions against corrosion, aging or fouling (encrustation) in the marine environment, under real conditions monitored on site.

The laboratory, which has had the help of the Basque Government for its construction and installation, will be located and will start operating in BIMEP, Biscay Marine Energy Platform, the marine energy research platform in the open sea, located in the Biscay town of Armintza and developed by the Basque Energy Agency, EVE.

Yesterday his “launch” was carried out in the port of Bermeo, in an act that was attended, among others, by the Minister of Economic Development and Infrastructure of the Basque Government and president of the EVE, Arantxa Tapia, the head of Tecnalia, Iñaki San Sebastián, as well as the managing director of the Basque Country Energy Cluster, José Ignacio Hormaeche.
