The knowledge of the materials and their properties throughout the life of the component is crucial in terms of efficiency, durability, integrity and safety.

TECNALIA has an extensive network of laboratories accredited by ENAC and Nadcap for testing materials. In addition to evaluating metallic materials, it evaluates polymeric materials, cement-based materials, glass, wood, etc. We focus our activity mainly on the development, validation, quality control and certification of products and components. We have multidisciplinary infrastructures with leading teams in their respective areas of specialization.

    The durability of the low axes of wind turbines, like that of many other components subject to cyclic loads, is limited by the action of fatigue mechanisms. Occasionally, unforeseen events occur in the design phase (corrosion processes, mounting damage, geometric errors, etc ...) causing the life to fatigue to be reduced dramatically.

    In a large number of wind turbines the substitution of the axes is not a viable alternative for economic reasons, instead, predictive maintenance measures that coexist with the cracks are implemented, and only those severely damaged axes are replaced.
