  • The Latest in Steel Welding Technology

    Fronius Perfect Welding is broadening its product range: The welding technology specialist is launching a new version of its current power source platform, called the TPS/i Steel Edition. The Steel Edition has been optimized for manual steel welding and impresses with an attractive price/performance ratio. Users benefit from different characteristics for standard and pulse welding, as well as a WPS package containing welding procedure specifications that are certified in accordance with DIN EN 1090.

    The TPS/i Steel Edition from Fronius is based on the current TPS/i power source platform. The welding systems have a modular design, can be adapted to individual requirements, and boast impressive networkability and comprehensive communication functions. Their powerful processors enable them to analyze and control welding processes with extreme precision. This ensures optimum results for a variety of welding tasks. The Steel Edition has been specially designed for manual steel welding. It has a variety of steel characteristics for both standard and pulsed arcs. Users are therefore able to carry out welding tasks on steel workpieces from a material thickness of one millimeter and above.

    A highlight of the new Steel Edition is the PCS (Pulse Controlled Spray Arc) characteristic: This provides a particular advantage in the intermediate arc range – the smooth transition from a pulsed to a spray arc creates considerably less welding spatter, which in turn significantly reduces the amount of rework required. In addition, this characteristic features a focused arc that guarantees a deep penetration profile. It is particularly suited to small gaps, fillet welds, and root passes.

  • Perfect Duet Makes for Increased Efficiency

    Fronius now offers its tandem welding process on the TPS/i welding platform. The TPS/i TWIN Push high performance welding system is not only more compact, easier to use, and network-capable, it also integrates enhancements to the welding process. For users this means higher deposition rates, higher welding speeds and increased efficiency in production due to the reduced need for pre-fabrication and rework.

    High performance welding is characterized by a high deposition rate that permits a high weld seam volume or high welding speeds. This is relevant in particular when joining high-volume components or long seams for construction machinery, commercial vehicles as well as automotive parts and in shipbuilding. The high processor power of the TPS/i improves the synchronized TWIN Push tandem process: The process is even more stable and reliable, and the enhanced gap-bridging ability saves the user time at the component preparation stage. The amount of rework can also be reduced, since precise control of the welding process enables controlled droplet detachment and low heat input into the component, permitting low-spatter results with minimal distortion.

    Fronius offers new process and control options with the TPS/i TWIN Push: PMC (Pulse Multi Control) TWIN features a short, focused pulsed arc that enables improved penetration and a higher welding speed. The PulseSync option allows the user to select widely varying travel speeds for the two wire electrodes.

  • How Process Control Variants are revolutionizing the Welding of Exhaust Components

    Even though electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in the automotive industry, analysts predict that by 2025, more than two thirds of all vehicles sold will still be powered exclusively by combustion engines. Reason enough to consider how best to weld them.

    Exhaust systems draw combustion gases from the engine and clean them. During this process they must withstand both high temperatures and corrosion. The demands placed on the individual components determine which material they should be made from.

    Automated metal active gas welding (MAG) welding is the process most often used to join exhaust components. The exhaust manifold is particularly challenging for the welding process: the tight component radii force the robot to reduce the welding speed. Nevertheless, the amount of energy directed into the component must be kept to a minimum and the welding process must remain stable and reproducible.

    High Efficiency Electronics Open Up New Possibilities

    Just like the exhaust manifold, other components also bring their own challenges. The type and thickness of the material used is based on the demands placed on the corresponding component group – for this reason, the welding process must also be adapted to suit the respective components. Fronius has a range of different process control variants for MAG welding that make it possible to consistently weld complex components. The high-performance electronics of modern power sources allow users to adapt the arc in a controlled manner and therefore achieve optimum results.
