  • Six Tips on Setting Up a New Laboratory

    End user preference is key in a laboratory.

    Think about your processes so furniture requirements can be analysed and layout suggestions made to optimise workflow and maximise productivity.

    What is the predicted daily occupancy and how much workspace is required per person? Also consider the positions of existing and new equipment so heat output can be calculated and service positions specified.

    Think about chemical use as this will impact on your worktop choice.

    Once you have established your requirements you can discuss the more technical aspects such as fume extraction and heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) with a Klick design consultant.

  • Klick 2019 Design Trend Predictions and Tips – Part 3 Research Laboratories

    In the final part of our three-part design series, we will be focusing on the research laboratory industry. As teaching and research develops within the scientific community laboratory design will continue to evolve and furniture provision needs to reflect this progression.

    Supporting Collaboration

    We are seeing an expansion of collaborative R & D centres, where science parks are supporting start-up companies and offering support and mentoring. These provide research lab and office space on a flexible basis with immediate access to facilities that would not normally be financially viable to small fledgling companies. This set up has the benefit of being part of a community and allows collaboration between scientists.

    A laboratory layout can be configured to support collaboration. For example, establishing in-between spaces to encourage teamwork and connectivity between researchers. Mobile laboratory furniture can be useful as units can be re-configured to allow for different group sizes as the research team grows. A well designed laboratory can create an inclusive and supportive environment that is focused on employee wellbeing.

    Furthermore, many research projects require input from external sources. If space permits, it is useful to have a multifunctional conference area that can also be used as a social space for research talent. Creating these in-between spaces allows for spontaneous collaboration between research talent.

  • Hologic, Manchester

    PROJECT BRIEF

    Gen-Probe Inc, now known as Hologic, is a molecular diagnostics company with headquarters in San Diego, California. The client wanted to redevelop their existing laboratories in Manchester as part of an expansion of the company’s European operations. Hologic specified the importance of maximising storage space and maintaining the highest levels of cleanliness throughout the testing facility.

    THE RESULTS

    The project required the development of bespoke laboratory storage units and some careful planning to incorporate existing storage systems into the modifications of the room. Our designers were involved in close liaison regarding the specification of the furniture and matching the colour to an existing scheme. Our team designed island and perimeter units with shelves underneath which were all fabricated in Trespa because of its robust and antimicrobial properties.
    Klick Technology also refurbished the pass through hatches with new doors.

    Whilst on site Klick incorporated some additional work into the programme and still managed to stick to the already tight programme.

  • University of York

    PROJECT BRIEF

    The Department of Biology was looking for laboratories to inspire bioscience students to become confident, collaborative, adaptable and independent graduates. The brief was to come up with a cost effective solution, allowing each department to reflect their individual identity whilst facilitating the smooth running of the workspace as a whole.

    THE RESULTS

    Klick were appointed by Interserve, following a competitive tender process, having agreed a discounted package for installation prior to the peak summer holiday period. The challenge was to inject life into the rooms, creating an individual identity for each department. Klick’s design team worked to interpret the brief and source special door colours to match the university’s scheme.

    The installation phase needed careful planning and collaboration with Interserve’s site team. The project required multiple deliveries to site and distribution of the furniture to upper levels, however Klick progressed efficiently through the rooms maintaining programme and adapting to site conditions. Positive communication was key throughout the project which helped to keep snags to a minimum. The end result is an impressive suite of colourful and functional laboratories suitable for 21st century learning.

  • Science Park Research Lab

    PROJECT BRIEF

    The client manages a science park and requested a flexible research laboratory space to be designed suitable for a start-up company. It was key for the environment to offer the best facilities, promote collaboration and help inspire potential new research talent.

    A priority was for the labs to be self-contained units, offering all the facilities required for scientific research but also flexibility to allow for expansion if required. The client also emphasised the importance of high-quality furniture that would withstand the demanding environment of a research laboratory.

    THE RESULT

    A design was developed to optimise workflow and material use within the space. Working closely with the end users, our designers discussed the best way to accommodate work processes. 3D drawings were presented to illustrate the laboratory furniture layouts and aid design decisions.

    Flexibility was paramount for the client. They needed to allow for changes in equipment requirements and increases in staff numbers as scientific research develops. For this reason, bespoke mobile workstations were designed with heavy duty steel frames, Trespa worktops, reagent shelving, self-levelling lockable castors, cable management and power sockets. The units are easy to move and relocate according to needs. Connections can be made into overhead power units or easily connected into floor boxes.

    In the third lab Klick were asked to extend several laboratory workbench areas in order to increase the capacity of an existing research facility. Bespoke deep benching has been designed in conjunction with the client. This required a 2 part robust framework to accommodate specialist machinery including analytical equipment.

    The client is extremely happy with the successful execution of work to complete the new research labs and has appointed Klick for a further installation.
