IKA launches photo bioreactor Algaemaster 10 control
IKA is extending its versatile product portfolio with a new product line. The fully autonomous photo bioreactor IKA Algaemaster 10 control is the perfect equipment for scientists to find and recreate the ideal environmental conditions for growing phototrophic organisms such as microalgae.
The device is a closed photo bioreactor system, which is particularly interesting if a high microbial purity level has to be reached and contamination risks have to be reduced to a minimum. Therefore, the Algaemaster 10 control is especially interesting for scientific purposes such as drug discovery in the pharmaceutical industry or translational science.
The fully jacketed 10 l system is ocean-water resistant; its lid and vessel are completely autoclavable, ensuring sterility. To minimize unintended reactions from metal or plastic parts that might release stray molecules into the water samples, the machine uses entirely ‘inert’ materials like borosilicate glass, PTFE and Ultem® thermoplastic. Lighting, temperature, stirring, pH and dosing of liquid or gas are individually controlled via several interfaces.
IKA developed and tested the system in a long-term cooperation with the Algal Resources Collection (ARC) at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW). ARC presents the opportunity for commercial, industrial, and academic research to explore the use of living marine microalgae for a variety of applications such as nutraceutical, pharmaceutical or biomass studies.
The scientists proved that the IKA Algaemaster 10 control enables researchers to grow algae in larger quantities, under better controlled conditions and faster than previously allowed methods.

The culmination of years of research at the crossroads of engineering and synthesis
Wilmington, NC, USA – In a unique endeavor, IKA owner René Stiegelmann has partnered up with Professor Phil S. Baran of the world-renowned Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California (USA). Over the past three years, engineers and chemists have worked hand in hand to develop a product combining two divisions of chemistry communities: the Electrochemical and the mainstream Synthetic Organic Chemistry Communities that traditionally don’t have much in common.
“The culmination of years of research at the crossroads of engineering and synthesis”, as Phil Baran describes the development of a new product that has its developmental origins dating back to an apparatus patented and developed by IKA in the 1920s. ElectraSyn 2.0 combines three products in one and will facilitate the mass adoption of electrochemistry for preparative organic synthesis. Society is always positively impacted by the development of sustainable reaction procedures that generate high yields, require less chemical reagents and thus produce less chemical waste. Synthetic organic electrochemistry is an innately sustainable and environmentally-friendly field whose widespread adoption has been primarily limited by gaps in engineering rather than desire or potential.

“Your Chemistry has Potential”
During the 254th American Chemical Society Fall Meeting in Washington, D.C., Phil Baran, Darlene Shiley Professor at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, CA, exclusively presented new research findings and unveiled a new product, ElectraSyn 2.0, combining a potentiostat, an analytical device and a stirring plate in one.
Phil Baran was introduced by Pascal Stiegelmann, owner family of IKA and Bibiana Campos-Seijo, PhD, Editor-in-Chief and VP of C&EN MEDIA GROUP.

Two powerful new stirrers
Staufen, Germany, July 10, 2019 - A new generation of hi-tech stirrers is awaiting users in the laboratory. The RCT 5 digital is one of the most powerful magnetic stirrers on the market. The NANOSTAR 7.5 digital overhead stirrer is an equally high performer and, at the same time, highly compact.
The right laboratory instrument for every stirring task - with an 850W motor, the RCT 5 digital magnetic stirrer now offers significantly more power and has a ceramic-coated set-up plate; there is also an adapter for using round heating and reaction blocks. The NANOSTAR 7.5 digital is only the size of an apple and is designed for stirring quantities of up to 5 liters. It provides constant torque over the entire speed range.
Both models are extremely robust. They have surfaces with displays made of hardened, chemical-resistant glass. The rectangular set-up plate of the RCT 5 digital is particularly scratch-resistant compared to conventional magnetic stirrers. A popular recognition factor for both stirrers is the familiar and intuitive IKA menu navigation.
The RCT 5 digital and NANOSTAR 7.5 digital are powerful on their own, but also form an ideal team for handling a wide range of different heating and stirring tasks. The magnetic stirrer achieves very good temperature control and mixing results up to 300 mPas. Furthermore, highly viscous liquids can be heated with the RCT 5 digital and thoroughly mixed with the overhead stirrer.
Followers inspire IKA
Staufen, May 7, 2019 - Eleven snazzy illustrations can now be downloaded from www.ika.com to individualize the set-up plate of the magnetic stirrer myPlate. And so, in addition to the outstanding technical properties of the well-known magnetic stirrers from IKA, myPlate also brings more color to the laboratory. The designs were inspired by IKA users themselves.
The magnetic stirrer myPlate combines the outstanding technical features of the popular and proven IKA magnetic stirrers color squid and big squid with the option of creative individualization. The set-up plate design can be altered autonomously, either with self-printed photos or with the new chemistry-related illustrations from IKA. 11 designs can now be downloaded from www.ika.com and easily applied to the magnetic stirrer.
And it was IKA users who inspired these designs. Many of the nearly 40,000 subscribers post creative impressions from their daily lab work on IKA's highly successful Instagram account. These 11 designs tell the exciting stories of this work. The ‘Instagram Collection’ combines drawings, elements of the periodic table and funny stories of everyday chemical reactions. Simply download, print and insert one into the convenient interchangable frame.

New all-rounder in coarse and fine crushing
Staufen, Germany, April 16, 2019 - Grinding, mixing, dispersing, weighing and temperature measurement in a single laboratory instrument: The new IKA MultiDrive is the first true all-rounder in the area of coarse and fine crushing. This world first is available from IKA now, for a wide variety of grinding tasks.
IKA MultiDrive can crush, grind and even thoroughly mix hard, soft or fibrous samples. A 1,000-watt output and a large number of suitable vessels ensure perfect adaptation to every new challenge encountered in the laboratory. The new crusher from IKA is suitable for applications in pharmacy, medicine, the food industry, biology or the biomass sector.
The new MultiDrive is available in a basic and control version. MultiDrive basic offers the option of interval programming and has integrated cooling. The MultiDrive control is particularly handy for users thanks to its additional integrated functions: It also measures the temperature in the vessel and weighs the samples directly in the grinding beaker. This means that laborious decanting is no longer necessary. In addition, the MultiDrive control has a clear TFT display and can be operated with disposable tubes.

A new pipette for every hand
Staufen, Feb. 20, 2019 - The new pipettes in the PETTE series from IKA were announced at the last ACHEMA and are now available. A total of 18 models combine all the most popular features of the laboratory classic. Their large displays, durable construction and ergonomic handles make the PETTE fix and vario ideal for frequent pipetting.
IKA PETTE unites everything lab technicians can expect for reliable metering in a single instrument. All models are fully autoclavable and can be easily sterilized. This ensures accuracy, precision and safety when metering. The large mechanical volume display is also easy to read as you perform the metering. The lightweight pipettes are particularly pleasant to hold thanks to three interchangeable ergonomic grips. The geometry of the receptacle is designed so that it is suitable for all commercially-available tips.
IKA PETTE fix and vario are also shock-resistant, UV and chemical resistant. Calibration and maintenance is user-friendly and can be done yourself or with the help of IKA Service.

German Design Award 2019 for IKA
The high-performance IKA T 25 easy clean homogenizer is the first of its kind in the world for use in research, product development or quality control. Now this unique laboratory device has been lauded with the German Design Award 2019 in the "Industry" category.
The disperser, which was launched at Achema 2018, homogenizes samples, emulsifies substances such as cosmetics and suspends paints and coatings. The device has been awarded a "Special Mention in the Industry Category" by the German Design Council for its outstanding design quality. "Those who prevail here against the high-profile competition have proven themselves to be among the best", writes Andrej Kupetz, Managing Director of the German Design Council in his congratulatory letter. The IKA T 25 easy clean disperser works quietly, efficiently and conveniently. Thanks to the intelligent, user-friendly device design, it is particularly smart to use.
The associated dispersing tool is designed in such a way that it can be easily cleaned without dismantling the unit, since the rotor can be removed in one simple step. In addition, the new disperser has a specially developed, particularly robust housing. IKA is very pleased about the award, because the "Special Mention" title honors workmanship with particularly successful aspects or solutions in its design. This is great recognition of IKA's commitment and that of its developers and designers.
The international premium prize has been awarded by the German Design Council since 2011. The award ceremony will take place on February 8, 2019 in the presence of 1,300 guests from politics, business, design and the press. It is one of the most important design events of the year aimed at discovering, presenting and distinguishing unique design trends.
New centrifuge: IKA G-L
IKA G-L is the ideal midi centrifuge for all types of separation processes such as those found in molecular biology. It can be used with standard 1.5/ 2 ml vessels as well as with PCR strips. The cover opens automatically at the press of a button. A clear state-of-the-art display eases operation. In addition, the centrifuge is fitted with a metal cover and does not start until it is firmly closed. Protection of the user is thus ensured. With its powerful motor IKA G-L achieves speeds from 800 up to 15,700 rpm and offers a centrifugal acceleration of 16,500 G.
Metal rotor and cover for 12 vessels, with a capacity of 1.5/ 2 ml, are already included in the scope of delivery.
New vacuum pump IKA VACSTAR control
The VACSTAR dry 4-chamber membrane vacuum pump is powerful, resistant to chemicals and low-maintenance. If 1:1 solutions are your objective, VACSTAR control is the ideal system with its integrated vacuum controller and removable display. With its 22 l/min at a minimum of 2 mbar, VACSTAR has an excellent suction performance and the automatic operating mode can be selected by using the intuitive operator menu of the Wireless Controller (WiCo). The pump has a rpm-regulated operation and protects the user as well as the environment with a downstream vacuum safety emission condenser (VSE 1). Furthermore, the VACSTAR control enacts a solvent library and a condesation trap.
Measuring viscosity with ROTAVISC
Staufen, 17/09/2018 - After it's been produced, stirred and shaken, the viscosity of a sample can now be measured with the new ROTAVISC series from IKA. This parameter indicates the fluidity of a substance and is important for quality control in all manufacturing processes and even early on in the application in the research laboratory. ROTAVISC is the most functional viscometer in its class.
Four new models for different viscosity ranges are part of the new product series. They deliver extremely precise measurements under different conditions, so that chemical substances, cosmetic products, paints or foodstuffs actually achieve the desired consistency and reliably maintain them, even at different temperatures.
The new ROTAVISC series viscometers are characterized by their infinite viscosity measurement ability. At the same time they are very easy to handle. In addition, device control and the documentation of the measurement process are possible using special software. ROTAVISC offers users the popular IKA laboratory equipment structure and can be tested in the IKA Application Center.
IKA Oven 125 control with highly convincing price-performance ratio
The IKA Oven 125 control dry and IKA Oven 125 control dry glass with 125 l illuminated interior and up to 6 insertable shelves are powerful drying cabinets for temperature regulation, drying, ageing and heating tasks. The control versions heat up to 300 °C and meet highest security requirements with the integrated temperature limiter (TWB according to DIN 12880). Apart from RS 232 and USB a PT 100 interface allows for direct temperature regulation in the test material. All important process parameters are displayed clearly on two large TFT displays. Depending on the laboratory conditions the door hinges can be installed either-way and the devices are stackable.
The standard package of the control models, including a practical cable bushing at the rear of the device, PT 100 interface as well as interior illumination, is already significantly more comprehensive compared to competitor products – and all that at an unbeatable price.
One out of 60 inventions: STARVISC 200-2.5 control officially launched
The device was introduced as a world first at the Achema 2018 in Frankfurt and has been officially launched on August 1, 2018. The Torque measurement instrument STARVISC has a broad range of applications. This is particularly helpful during product development: STARVISC already clearly indicates while running research programmes as to whether the stirred substance can be used as desired. The device is characterized by high-precision measurement, a user-friendly menu for viscosity calculation, a removable control and a powerful and very intense agitator.
