ENERGY STAR® Certification for ULT freezers
As further step into the green future, Eppendorf sent several ULT freezers to ENERGY STAR, the American testing agency for energy-saving instruments, for evaluation.
The Eppendorf ULT freezers CryoCube F570h (115V), CryoCube FC660h (208V), CryoCube F740i, CryoCube F740hi, and CryoCube F740hiw are now certified by ENERGY STAR as energy efficient ULT freezers.
The CryoCube F740 units are also certified by the ACT label of MyGreenLab.org regarding their sustainability footprint.

The coveted 2017 Scientists’ Choice Awards, organized by SelectScience, were announced during the Pittcon 2017 Expo in Chicago, IL. The annual awards celebrate the laboratory products and manufacturers that make a difference to the industry. Scientists are invited to nominate, vote and review online.
Eppendorf was awarded ‘Customer Service of the Year.’ This award acknowledges the company which has received the highest average review rating for after-sales service across all products. “Scientists expect to read reviews and receive validation from others when investing in their laboratory, so it is a hugely significant accolade for Eppendorf that their customers see the company as best-in-class for service and support in the science industry,” said Kerry Parker, Editor-in-Chief for SelectScience.
The Eppendorf Centrifuge 5920 R received the award for ‘Best New General Laboratory Product.’ The centrifuge is the ideal product for high-throughput applications. “The new product was a result of a lot of engineering expertise. It’s especially important because we know what the voting process is here – this is voted on by scientists. Eppendorf Award for Young European Investigators 2019: Call for Entries!
From October 1, 2018, until January 15, 2019, young researchers not older than 35 years, with an advanced degree, who are performing biomedical research in Europe are invited to apply for the Eppendorf Award for Young European Investigators 2019.
The Eppendorf Award for Young European Investigators was first established in 1995. It acknowledges outstanding contributions to biomedical research in Europe based on methods of molecular biology, including novel analytical concepts.
The Award is presented in partnership with the scientific journal Nature.
Prize money: 20,000 EUR
You can apply for the Eppendorf Award for Young European Investigators from October 1 of each year onwards.
In 2018 Eppendorf AG is presenting the Eppendorf Award for Young European Investigators for the 23rd time. The independent Eppendorf Award Jury chaired by Prof. Reinhard Jahn selected Prof. Dr. Andrea Ablasser, Assistant Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland, as the 2018 winner. Andrea Ablasser, born 1983, receives the € 20,000 prize for her contributions to a key step in the innate immune response, which triggers a frontline defense when cells are attacked by microorganisms.
The official prize ceremony took place at the EMBL Advanced Training Centre in Heidelberg, Germany, on June 21, 2018.

Eppendorf Receives SelectScience® Seal of Quality Award at Lab Innovations 2018
At a special presentation ceremony hosted by Dr. Arif Butt, CEO and Co-Founder of online publisher SelectScience®, and Editor, Dr. Lois Manton O’Byrne, at Lab Innovations 2018, Birmingham, science industry leaders joined them to celebrate one year of the new Seals of Quality program, designed to further help scientists make important purchasing decisions.
Among other products from life science manufacturers, the Eppendorf Research® plus pipette (adjustable) was recognized as being within the top 0.1% of laboratory products that consistently receive the highest customer review ratings. The pipette was therefore announced as a Seal of Quality Bronze award winner.

The solution for NGS library-construction: epMotion® 5073m NGS solution
Until now, the automated construction of Next Generation Sequencing libraries has only been economical for preparations of at least 96 samples, as entire plates are processed using multichannel dispensing tools. Furthermore, large pipetting stations are often costly and take up valuable space in the laboratory. As a result, smaller sample numbers are processed manually using pipettes. This approach requires time and concentration, and it involves a multitude of pipetting steps. Pipetting errors are difficul t to avoid entirely, and they are rarely traceable. At the same time, NGS libraries, and the quality of their sequences, rely on the accuracy and reproducibility afforded by automated pipetting stations.
A solution is now available for all researchers who work with small sample numbers, whose laboratory space is limited or who generate NGS libraries manually. Up to 24 samples can be processed simultaneously in a fully automated fashion using the epMotion® 5073m NGS solution. The workstation is optimized in such a way that almost no intervention is required and the construction of the library can proceed independently. Smooth operation is guaranteed by ample space for a sufficient number of pipette tips, the three required single and multichannel pipetting tools in the volume range covering 5-300 μL, and a special rack that accommodates all the required solutions.
The renowned precision and accuracy of Eppendorf pipettes also applies to the dispensing tools within the epMotion. The optimized epBlue™ software enables smart use of the single channel and multichannel dispensing tools in order to optimize pipetting steps and tip use even in the case of odd sample numbers. This saves time and money, and it reduces waste. And all of that on a footprint of only 6 letter-sized pieces of paper. Notification emails generated by the system to alert the user about manual steps allow the operator to step away from the instrument and focus their attention on other tasks.
Eppendorf Conical Tubes 25 mL - Eppendorf launches an innovative tube format
Working with sample volumes between 15 mL and 25 mL - often used in bacterial/microorganism culture as well as during purification of plasmid DNA/biomolecules, in cell culture or during assay preparation, leaves no option to researchers but to work with a traditional high-volume tube like the 50 mL conical tube. In recognition of this fact, Eppendorf has developed the Eppendorf Conical Cube 25 mL - available with either the new, patented SnapTec cap or with screw cap.
These conical tubes have the same diameter as conventional 50 mL conical tubes but a ~20 % lower height. This allows space-saving storage, for example in freezers. Additionally, the consumption of valuable raw material is reduced by 26 % for the screw cap 25 mL conical tube and by 20 % for the SnapTec cap 25 mL conical tube compared to a conventional 50 mL tube. Proportionally, laboratory waste of conical tubes will therefore also be reduced.
The wide opening, combined with the lower height, offers easy sample access. When working with low-volume pipettes and tips, the risk of cross-contamination between pipette and tube by touching the inner tube wall is reduced to a minimum.
Premium raw materials, without the use of plasticizers and biocides during manufacturing, ensure highest sample integrity and optimal sample and pellet visibility.
The most innovative feature is the patented SnapTec cap, which is unique within the conical tubes market. This cap is firmly connected to the tube. No need to put the cap on the bench, running the risk that caps from different tubes may become mixed up or contaminated. The SnapTec cap allows single-handed opening and closing for quick liquid extraction or addition of sample. This is particularly advantageous in multistep lab protocols.
Of course, the Eppendorf Conical Tubes 25 mL are directly deployable. Straightforward integration into the existing laboratory environment is ensured. Concurrently, Eppendorf provides a full system of components.
2019 Eppendorf Award for Young European Investigators presented to Georg Winter
In 2019, the Hamburg life science company is presenting its highly prestigious research prize for the 24th time. The independent Eppendorf Award Jury chaired by Prof. Reinhard Jahn selected Dr. Georg Winter, Principal Investigator at the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna, Austria, as the 2019 winner of the Eppendorf Award for Young European Investigators.
The Award ceremony took place at the EMBL Advanced Training Centre in Heidelberg, Germany, on June 27, 2019. The laudatio honoring Georg Winter’s achievements was held by Award Jury Chairman Prof. Reinhard Jahn of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, Göttingen.
Georg Winter, born 1985, receives the € 20,000 prize for his pioneering work developing a method for targeting specific proteins for degradation using heterobifunctional chemical compounds to specifically recruit ubiquitin E3 ligases to the intended protein target for destruction.
The Jury: “This powerful system enables targeting of previously undruggable targets and shows promise both in cells and in vivo in model systems as an emerging therapy.” Georg Winter’s work has led to a fury of excitement across pharmaceutical companies and has resulted in several patents; it holds promise to yield novel therapies for cancer and other diseases of unmet need.
Georg Winter: “I felt incredibly honored and humbled when I learned that I will be awarded with the 2019 Eppendorf Award. This price recognizes our work in innovating a generalizable solution to targeted protein degradation in vivo. We are pursuing this new therapeutic paradigm towards our ultimate goal of degrading disease-relevant proteins that are thus far deemed ‘undruggable’.
My contribution to this exciting field would not have been possible without groundbreaking work from esteemed peers, the amazing support from mentors, and close and fruitful collaborations with colleagues in the lab.”
Eppendorf CryoCube® F740 ULT freezers now all-green
Eppendorf reached a further milestone of sustainability by focusing the flagship ULT freezer CryoCube F740 series on future-proof green cooling liquids only: The new F740h, the advanced F740hi, and the water-cooled F740hiw.
By combining longevity and quality with sustainability aspects, the CryoCube F740h is the entry model of the CryoCube F740 series. 740 L of -80°C can be filled with up to 576 freezer boxes. Compared to its predecessor, the F740h saves up to 25% of power.
This is a further building block in a longer green Eppendorf story. Eppendorf now has 10 years of experience in research and development, production, logistics, and service in the field of green ULT freezers.
