  • New Field Analytics System For Matrix Gemini LIMS Extends Use To The Field

Autoscribe Informatics has launched the Matrix Gemini Field Analytics System to extend the use of the LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) to the field. Further enhancing remote access capabilities for Matrix Gemini, the new Field Analytics System allows test data to be recorded off-line and uploaded to the LIMS when an internet connection can be re-established.

The Field Analytics System is designed to operate on an Android tablet or mobile device and sync with the Matrix Gemini LIMS database. It enables users to select and download the sample information they want from Matrix Gemini. The sample data can be edited and relevant test results recorded off-line.

Results are automatically checked as they are entered to ensure they are a valid type (numeric, test etc.). Updated results are stored until an Internet or mobile data connection becomes available and it is convenient to upload the data to the Matrix Gemini LIMS database server.

Communicating with the database server via a web service, the Field Analytics System authenticates user rights before allowing access for data download/upload. It also records user identities when data is uploaded or changed. To limit the data downloaded, users may specify which samples are of interest. This keeps sync times to a minimum. A built-in search facility allows users to limit the number of samples shown at any one time on the device.

  • Monitoring Laboratory Instrument Calibration And Maintenance Status

The Instrument Calibration & Maintenance System (ICMS) from Autoscribe Informatics keeps a computerized record of all instruments within a laboratory and a history of calibration and maintenance events for audit purposes. This helps to ensure only properly calibrated and maintained instruments are available for use. ICMS is available as an option within the Matrix Gemini Laboratory Information Management System or as a standalone product.

The instrument details, calibration and maintenance information are recorded in ICMS in order to allow the instrument status to be tracked automatically. It can therefore provide immediate feedback on instrument availability at the time a particular analysis is scheduled, rather than checking the status when the results need to be entered. This prevents the allocation of work to an un-calibrated instrument or one that has not been maintained correctly. It also allows the identification of events such as the maintenance period being exceeded.

The system can provide reminders of pending calibration and maintenance tasks and allows assessment of instrument support agreement value. These in turn ensure the laboratory can demonstrate that it follows standard calibration and maintenance procedures and can indicate which instruments are most costly in terms of maintenance and reliability.

An automatic change of status occurs when calibration or maintenance is overdue and when it is performed. As well as flagging events that affect the availability of instruments, the system can produce a series of useful reports. These include: calibration and maintenance schedules; instruments due for calibration or maintenance over a user specified period ; overdue calibrations and maintenance events as well as all unavailable instruments. It is also possible to develop additional reports using Crystal Reports or other reporting tools.

  • Autoscribe Informatics To Show Enhancements in Analytical Quality Control Functions to Maximize Laboratory Throughput

Autoscribe Informatics will be demonstrating the latest version of the Matrix Gemini LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) at Lab Innovations 2018. New features shown for the first time include advanced analytical quality control (AQC) functions to better reflect modern practices, drive improved efficiency and maximize the use of resources across the laboratory. A new flexible ‘Container View’ that allows many different container types (such as well-plates and FluidXTM racks) to be represented in the LIMS will also be demonstrated for the first time at the Show.

Advanced AQC allows the laboratory to maximize sample throughput while meeting regulatory and quality standards and without compromising the quality or accuracy of data. It provides highly flexible run sheet functionality, allowing users to create run sheet templates that meet the needs of today’s analytical laboratory. AQC samples including blanks, duplicates, replicates, spikes, controls, spike duplicates and control duplicates and their position within a run can be defined based on user defined patterns.

Advanced AQC allows complex rules to be used when placing control samples amongst standard samples within a run sheet. These rules include set positioning of individual QC samples, leading and trailing sets of QC samples as well as repeating patterns and randomized positioning within sets of unknown samples.

Run sheets are created by selecting the unknown samples to be included and adding them to a template within the arrangement of the AQC samples. Once finalized, the run sheets can be used as load lists for instruments, which may produce results in electronic form for import into Matrix Gemini. AQC samples have appropriate calculations associated with them depending on their type and these are triggered automatically when the appropriate results have been entered into the LIMS.

  • Autoscribe Informatics To Show Environmental Monitoring Solution

Autoscribe Informatics will be demonstrating the Matrix Gemini Environmental Monitoring solution at the IFT18 Food Expo. This extension of the Matrix Gemini LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) allows control of environmental testing across all food preparation and storage sites, dramatically reducing costly product recalls and driving FSMA compliance.

This new module uniquely links sampling point locations, test results and corrective action plans in one easy to use graphical environment. This makes it perfect for sampling management to ensure sanitary conditions in all critical areas in food/beverage production. FSMA legislative requirements in the USA are bringing the focus onto the prevention of contamination in the food supply chain, rather than just identifying it when it occurs. The Matrix Gemini Environmental Monitoring solution provides a robust framework for regular testing for contaminants at strategic locations in food manufacturing and processing plants.

The new module offers comprehensive functionality including visual mapping of results by status and instant graphical identification of the location where a failure has occurred. Once results are validated then reports can be generated very quickly and easily. Trend analysis of the results can be made without needing to transfer the information to a separate, non-validated spreadsheet. This allows early preventative action to be taken. In keeping with the fundamental philosophy of Matrix Gemini, the Environmental Monitoring module is fully configurable to meet the needs of individual laboratories and manufacturing units.

  • Tree View Control Added To Matrix Gemini LIMS

The Matrix Gemini LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) from Autoscribe Informatics now features ‘Tree View Control’. Tree View, and a number of performance and security enhancements, are part of software release v5.4.5. This is now available to all current Matrix Gemini v5 users and, of course, will be supplied to all new customers. The new functionality allows the display of hierarchical data from the LIMS linked in an easy to navigate parent/child tree structure.

The display and behavior of each level in the hierarchy can be specified and fully configured using the Matrix Gemini configuration tools. When items within the tree are selected other controls such as lists will be updated to respond to the selection. Tree structures can be configured with a search facility which provides the flexibility to easily locate unique items within the tree as well as items (such as types of test) that might appear in multiple locations within the tree.

Tree structures are useful in many applications. For example, all the different levels and actions within an SOP (standard operating procedure) can be readily displayed and accessed. Rigorous conformance to SOPs for every analysis is an essential requirement in highly regulated industries and QA/QC laboratories. The tree also helps with traceability. All activities relating to samples, tests, resources etc. within an SOP are automatically flagged by Matrix Gemini with a revision number, time, date and user ID so the execution of every step within a standard operating procedure can be traced back up the tree.

Another useful application is location identification, for example in biobanks. Here there may be a number of rooms containing freezers and refrigerators. These are then further organized according to shelf number, container type
and container position. Tree view provides easy navigation to see the location of specific samples.

  • Key Questions To Ask When Choosing Your Next LIMS

Choosing a new LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) or upgrading an existing one can be quite a challenge. A recent webinar from Autoscribe Informatics entitled ‘Key Questions To Ask When Choosing Your Next LIMS’ can now be viewed at: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/1646970949825347586

This webinar is designed to help you consider the critical areas that will influence the choices to be made. Some of the topics covered include:

    What is a LIMS?
    Why is a LIMS needed?
What are the different implementation methods?
how do you find the right LIMS?
    Who should be involved?

Laboratories are changing fast. With more automation, new methodologies and tighter regulation the right LIMS can help manage and improve productivity in the laboratory as well as being adaptable as needs change.

The webinar discusses the review of current processes in use, such as how samples are tracked, results recorded and reports produced. People using electronic systems such as spreadsheets and internal databases may feel they are addressing some issues, but such systems are not validated. Any existing LIMS should be evaluated for pain points, weak links, missing functionality and any new features that might be required. Another important requirement is to establish a budget for purchasing and supporting the system and setting a time frame for implementation.

Assembling the most appropriate team for the project is also covered in the webinar as well as answers to questions such as; which departments will be represented, who will be the project lead and how the project will be managed? Consideration is also given to how the laboratory will be prepared for change.
