Millions of Tons of the World’s Plastic Waste Could Be Turned into Clean Fuels, and Other Products through New Chemical Conversion

The United Nations estimates that more than 8 million tons of plastics flow into the oceans each year. A new chemical conversion process could transform the world’s polyolefin waste, a form of plastic, into useful products, such as clean fuels and other items.

“Our strategy is to create a driving force for recycling by converting polyolefin waste into a wide range of valuable products, including polymers, naphtha (a mixture of hydrocarbons), or clean fuels,” said Linda Wang, the Maxine Spencer Nichols Professor in the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University and leader of the research team developing this technology. “Our conversion technology has the potential to boost the profits of the recycling industry and shrink the world’s plastic waste stock.”

Amazon protects workers from AGV mishaps

Online retail giant and logistics innovator Amazon is working on safety vests to protect its workers from AGVs and warehouse robots. According to TechCrunch, Amazon last year began rolling out a new worker safety wearable to 25-plus sites. The vests, designed by Amazon Robotics, are aimed at keeping workers safe when they need to enter a space in order to fix a robotic system or retrieve fallen items. Built-in sensors alert Amazon’s robotic systems to the wearer’s presence, and they slow down to avoid collision...

Forklifts cope with snow – but require caution

The recent heavy snowfalls in Europe have highlighted the challenges for materials handling in extreme conditions. As Jungheinrich spokesman Benedikt Nufer sees it, regular forklifts are not designed "to operate in snow masses like we have at the moment in parts of Germany". Georgia manufacturer sells to Greif for $1.8 billion

Caraustar Industries Inc., a box manufacturer located west of Atlanta, has sold to global packaging company Grief Inc for nearly $2 billion. Greif Inc. said it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Caraustar, a unit of H.I.G. Middle Market, in a cash transaction valued at $1.8 billion. The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of calendar year 2019.

Plastipak to expand Texas site

Plastipak will expand its Garland, Texas manufacturing site later this year with a $10 million investment primarily in enhanced machinery and equipment. The existing 400,000-square-foot Garland site, which began operations in 1996, provides rigid plastic containers for companies including Dr Pepper, PepsiCo, Kraft Heinz and Procter & Gamble. The company also maintains nearly 500,000 square feet of warehousing and distribution space in two other locations in Garland...

TVH introduces new 6,600lbs pallet truck

TVH has introduced a new pallet truck unlike any other. The TSP6630 has a maximum capacity of 6,600lbs which is one of the highest capacity trucks in the industry. It boasts extra strong steel reinforcement rods, designed to hold the heaviest of loads. It has entry and exit fork rollers that guarantee maximum stability for safely transporting goods and casting steel pump rods for extra strength. The TSP6630 has a nylon steer single nylon load configuration, a truck width of 27 inches and a fork length of 48 inches.

Barry Wingard honored with achievement award

Mr. Barry Wingard has been awarded the prestigious 2018 Morris Hershson Award of Merit at the RIPA (Reusable Industrial Packaging Association) annual conference at the Houstonian Resort and Spa. RIPA presents the award to an individual for “distinguished and longstanding service” to the reusable industrial packaging industry. Barry, a co-owner and senior operations director at Container Life Cycle Management LLC, has worked in the industrial container industry for over 40 years.

Honeywell Completes Acqusition of Transnorm

Honeywell has completed its acquisition of warehouse automation solutions provider Transnorm. Honeywell acquired the Harsum, Germany-based Transnorm from IK Investment Partners for approximately EUR425 million (USD480 million) in a deal that was announced in October. Transnorm is a global leader in high-performance conveyor solutions that are used in diverse markets such as the parcel delivery, e-commerce fulfilment and airport industries.

Nigerian government bans pallet production

The Edo State Government in Nigeria has banned the production of wooden pallets outside of registered mills to protect under-age and under-girth trees.  In a statement, Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Dame Omua Alonge Oni-Okpaku, commented: “The ministry has observed with dismay that operators of bench-mills in the State have formed the habit of felling under-aged and under-girth trees and using them in the production of pallets. This irresponsible behaviour is decimating our already depleted forest resources.”

Dunapack breaks ground in Romania

Dunapack Rambox, part of the Prinzhorn Group, announces the start of construction works for its new packaging plant in Romania. The new 27,000 m2 factory will feature state-of-the-art equipment such as a high-speed 2.8 m Fosber corrugator, a high-precision, multi-color converting machine by Bobst as well as an automated pallet operation system. Planned production capacity is 180 million m2/year.

Intertape Polymer Group Completes Acquisition

Canadian protective packaging products and systems company Intertape Polymer Group (IPG) has announced that it has finalized the deal to acquire 100% of the outstanding equity value in Polyair Inter Pack Inc., a North American supplier of protective packaging. The aggregate purchase price of the transaction is approximately $146 million, subject to certain purchase price adjustments.
