Intra Drive Limited is an Edinburgh based start-up, which over the last 3 years has developed innovative drivetrain technology for the e-bike market. Commuting by e-bike in cities is affordable and fast. e-bikes have zero tailpipe emissions and a low embodied carbon footprint. Future Market Insights (FMI), has estimated that the global market for e-bikes will be worth $6.1 billion by 2027.
All current mid-drive motor units (produced by market leaders such as Bosch, Shimano and Yamaha) use traditional derailleur gearing systems to provide a range of speeds. The additional power provided by the motor causes accelerated wear of the sprockets and chain, meaning these "consumable" parts need regular replacement, which is both costly and time consuming.
The founder's vision of a super low maintenance e-bike drivetrain is realised through the use hardened steel gears with oil lubrication running in a sealed gearbox. The compact and highly integrated drive unit combines an 8 speed gearbox, a lightweight brushless motor, and novel electronic gear shifting technology.
Several large European ebike motor manufacturers have expressed a strong interest in Intra drive's technology and have stated that they see multi-speed gearbox technology is the future for ebikes.
Intra Drive is seeking a commercial partner to complete development work, and manufacturer the product under licence.
