ARCONIC FASTENING SYSTEMS INTRODUCES NEW 316 MARINE GRADE (A4) STAINLESS STEEL MAGNA-LOK® BLIND FASTENING SYSTEM
Retaining all the features of the standard version of the Magna-Lok structural blind fastener; including a wide grip range to accommodate large variations in joint thickness, 360 internal locking technology enabling the pin to be mechanically locked to the sleeve, expansion during installation for excellent joint tightness and high-quality resistance to liquid penetration; the 316 A4 stainless steel Magna-Lok fastener also offers corrosion resistance beyond anything else in the Huck blind fastener range.
Known as ‘marine grade’ due to its preferred use in the construction of boats, ships, oil and gas rigs, and off-shore wind farm towers, 316 is an austenite stainless steel which contains 18 percent chromium and 12 percent nickel. Steel is considered stainless when its chromium content is at a minimum of 10.5 per cent. Therefore, a higher content will result in an enhanced corrosion resistance. Unreactive chromium III oxide can form on a component's surface, protecting the metal beneath from the environment. Nickel further increases the corrosion resistance of the resultant alloy.
Andrew Smith, engineering manager at AFS, said: “Magna-Lok is the most popular and versatile of our structural blind fasteners. Combined with the demand from our customers for a high-performance corrosion-resistant fastener, it was the obvious choice on which to develop a 316 stainless steel version. In addition to offshore applications, we are also looking at its use in food processing machinery, heat exchangers, chemical storage facilities and medical equipment.”
ARCONIC FASTENING SYSTEMS INTRODUCES HIGH STRENGTH 12.7MM DIAMETER HUCK® MAGNA-LOK® FASTENER
The large diameter 12.7mm Magna-Lok fastener has extremely high shear (44.4Kn) and tensile (31.1Kn) strengths, plus high resistance to joint failure. It offers 60 and 57 percent respective increases in shear and tensile strengths when compared to its predecessor, the R12 9.5mm fastener. The higher strength capability provides the user with the option of installing fewer fasteners per application, thus facilitating a reduced inventory, faster production times and potentially resulting in lighter-weight products.
In addition to its high strength, the new product has all of the features of the standard Magna-Lok blind fastener, including a wide grip range to accommodate large variations in joint thickness, and 360° internal locking technology which enables the pin to be mechanically locked to the sleeve. Its expansion during installation also provides excellent joint tightness and high-quality resistance to liquid penetration. The 12.7mm diameter Magna-Lok fastener has been approved by the widely recognised Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt).

ARCONIC'S HUCK BOBTAIL LOCKBOLT FASTENER EARNS PRESTIGIOUS TECHNICAL RECOGNITION AND DEEMED MAINTENANCE-FREE
The accreditation was awarded by internationally recognised approval body Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt).
Declared by DIBt as ‘maintenance free’, the 12, 14, 16, 20mm and 1inch diameter BobTail is now approved to be used in both static and dynamic civil engineering applications. The test results met DIN EN 1993 (EURO Code 3 – Design of Steel Structures), DIN 18800-1 (Steel Structures – Design and Construction) and BSEN 1090 (Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures) standards. The coating; resistant to ISO 12944 standard and chrome 6 free; was also found to retain its integrity as there is no exposed area after the fastener is installed.
An Allgemeine bauaufsichtliche Zulassungen (national technical approval) is granted to products and types of construction for which there are either no generally acknowledged rules of technology or DIN (Deutsches Institut Fur Normang e.V.) standards. While DIBt’s abZ accreditation holds legal status in Germany, Austria and Switzerland only, it is widely recognised as a pan-European industrial quality standard. However, based on the DIBt approval AFS is currently in the process of securing an ETA (European Technical Approval) licence with plans for it to be in place by 2013.
Commenting on the outcome of the BobTail testing Hans-Albert Stadler, customer engineering director Europe at Arconic Fastening Systems, said: “The DIBt test confirmed that a BobTail is maintenance-free during the lifetime of the joint it is fastening, which is not the case when using traditional nut and bolt products. As a result, it can be integrated into a range of applications with complete confidence by civil engineering designers. Our next step is to seek DIBt approval for larger BobTail sizes M27, M30 and M36, as well as other fasteners such as the Magna-Bulb® and Magna-Lok®.”
RECOIL® TANGLESS® INSERTS - THE NEXT STEP IN WIRE THREAD INSERT EVOLUTION
Recoil Tangless inserts are designed to offer the same reliable thread strengthening whilst minimizing the risk of losing a ‘tang’ associated with tanged inserts. Generally, wire thread inserts use a small, piece of material at the bottom of the insert to provide a catching point for the installation tooling, making installation possible. The tang is broken off and removed after installation.
Tangless inserts, however, can be installed without the use of a tang using specialised tooling and an installation notch on the bottom coil of the insert. The absence of a tang eliminates the risk of the metal tang falling into safety critical applications such as engines or electronic equipment.
Metric Tangless inserts are designed to replace tanged helical coil inserts as specified in MA3279 through MA3281 (standard thread) and MA3329 through MA3331 (locking thread). They install in standard STI tapped holes per MA1567. Installed inserts provide a finished thread meeting the requirements of FED-STD-H28, M Profile, Tolerance Classes 4H or 5H, as well as ISO metric thread specifications, and accept standard or MJ profile bolts or screws.
Recoil Tangless inserts are available in free-running, screw-locking and strip-feed varieties.
