Bitrez expands presence in USA with appointment of Dr Shahid Qureshi as Technical Specialist for North America
Dr Quershi has more than 35 years’ experience of working within high performance composites, including 27 years as a Senior Research Scientist at Georgia Pacific Chemicals.
With a career that’s taken him around the globe, Dr Quershi has a degree in organic chemistry from Government College University Pakistan, a Post Grad diploma in Polymer Chemistry from Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan and a PhD in Polymer Science and Engineering from Lehigh University, Pennsylvania USA. To add to these accolades, he has over 15 patents and 10 publications to his name.
Dr Quershi appointment comes hot on the heels of the announcement last week that Bitrez has appointed Georgia-Pacific Chemicals as exclusive distributor for its Curaphen speciality phenolics across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Paul Jones, Managing Director of Bitrez, said: “We’re very pleased to have Dr Quershi on board. Over his distinguished career, he has amassed a wealth of experience and knowledge in thermoset resin formulation and applications for advanced composites, across a plethora of industries, including aerospace. Couple this with his licensing and marketing experience in countries such as China, Korea and India – and it’s clear to see how Dr Quershi’s unique skill set will play a key role in helping us to expand our presence in the coatings and composite markets in North America.”
Dr Qureshi said: “After 35 years at the top of my game, the thought of approaching retirement didn’t exactly fill me with me with glee as I’m not one to stay at home and watch TV all day! When the opportunity arose to champion Bitrez in the USA, I couldn’t’ say no. I’d heard of them during my days at Georgia Pacific, so I knew the calibre of their chemistry. I’m delighted to have joined Bitrez and am very excited about what the future holds!”
Dr Qureshi will be attending SAMPE in May in North Carolina and CAMX 2019 in California in September.
Georgia-Pacific Chemicals to distribute Bitrez Curaphen speciality phenolics across United States, Canada and Mexico
The appointment extends to all but a small group of existing Bitrez customers. Georgia-Pacific Chemicals, a subsidiary of Georgia-Pacific LLC, has decades of experience in coatings and other markets and manufactures its own portfolio of proven phenolic products, including FRP resins, air dry and thermosetting systems, aqueous dispersions for lower VOC as well as crosslinkers for powder coatings.
The low free monomer Curaphen range, is a series of industry-leading phenolic polymer resins that includes specialist grades offering low free phenol and some with formaldehyde contents of less than 0.1%.
The Curaphen range is also gaining traction in other businesses across the globe including aerospace, rail and construction where it is favoured as a matrix resin. As well as being flame retardant with excellent smoke and toxicity properties, its light weight and good mechanical and structural strength, make it ideal for interior components in aircraft, trains and buildings.
Paul Jones, Managing Director of Bitrez Ltd, says; “We are very excited to be working with Georgia-Pacific Chemicals LLC – a well-established organisation with an excellent reputation. We already export across Europe so it’s great news that Georgia-Pacific Chemicals will help us extend our reach in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Creative chemistry is our lifeblood and it drives us to develop innovative solutions to fill the gap provided by products that have been withdrawn from the market due to regulatory reform.”
“The addition of the Bitrez products to our North American offerings augments our ability to help our customers address regulatory challenges,” says Robert Schlager, Manager of Georgia-Pacific Chemicals coatings business. “We are impressed with the quality and innovation of their products, the quality of the Bitrez organisation and are honoured to be associated with them. Our relationship supports our vision of offering our customers the best technology available to meet their needs.”
Bitrez wins Queen’s Award for Innovation
The Wigan-based company secured the award – the UK’s most prestigious accolade for business success – in the Innovation category for its Bisphenol A (BPA) free resin, Curaphen.
Launched in 2013, Curaphen is used for the internal coatings of food and drink packaging.
Following a worldwide health scare regarding the potential harm caused by BPA to humans – with media emphasis directed to expectant mothers and babies, Bitrez developed Curaphen – an alternative polymer to BPA based grades, for use with non-epoxy-based systems.
Not only does Curaphen satisfy new regulations but it also meets desirable processing and performance requirements.
Bitrez’s exports have increased by 45 per cent in the past five years, with almost a third of this coming from Curaphen. The company has also doubled its capacity and now runs a 24-7 operation to ensure it can continue to meet increasing volume requirements. To date, Bitrez has sold over 800 tonnes of Curaphen equating to millions of food and packaging containers safely coated with Curaphen every week.
Paul Jones, Bitrez Ltd Managing Director and formulator of the product said: “I’m delighted that Bitrez has won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise especially in the innovation category. Resolution of regulatory and technical problems is at the heart of our business strategy and commitment to product development. This is what drives us to continue to design products like this Curaphen grade and being able to manufacture an alternative to conventional BPA derivatives with equivalent performance is a great example of the positive impact creative chemistry and ingenuity can have on our lives. This award celebrates everyone at Bitrez who worked so hard to bring the product to market, as well as the loyalty of our much valued supplier and customers who trust in our expertise and commitment to develop innovative products to comply with regulatory reform.”
