  • Bitrez strikes gold at manufacturing awards

The awards which recognise excellence among manufacturing companies in six categories, as well as two Apprentice categories, were presented at the North West annual dinner of Make UK which was sponsored by Japanese IT solutions provider Hulft and held at Hotel Football in Manchester.

Bitrez, which employs 102 people, is a Queens’ Award winning manufacturer of synthetic resin, catalysts and curing agents for high performance markets such as aerospace, defence, automotive, rail, marine, packaging and more.

Bitrez was given the Make UK Innovation Award for its development of Curaphen – Bisphenol A (BPA) free resins. Launched in 2013, Curaphen is used for the internal coatings of food and drink packaging.

Following a worldwide health scare regarding the potential harm caused by BPA to humans – with media emphasis directed to expectant mothers and babies – Bitrez developed Curaphen, an alternative polymer to BPA based grades, for use with non-epoxy-based systems.

Not only does Curaphen satisfy new regulations but it also meets desirable processing and performance requirements.

Paul Jones, Bitrez Ltd Managing Director and formulator of the product said: “I’m delighted that Bitrez has won the Make UK Innovation Award. Using creative chemistry to develop innovative products that resolve regulatory and technical problems is our raison d’être. This award pays tribute to everyone at Bitrez who worked so hard to bring the product to market, as well as the loyalty of customers and suppliers.”

All the winners will now go forward to the national finals to be judged in London in December.

  • All-composite wheel for electric vehicles wins funding

The world’s first commercially viable, low cost, lightweight, all-composite wheel for electric and niche vehicles such as driverless cars, last mile delivery vehicles, road sweepers and next generation of agricultural vehicles could soon be a reality after winning grant funding of £135,500.

The ACRIM (All Composite Reduced Inertia Modular Wheels) wheel project – which is being developed by a consortium of UK composite experts comprising Carbon ThreeSixty, Far UK and Bitrez Ltd – won the funding after entering the Niche Vehicle Network competition.

Forecast to be 4kg lighter than a generic 8Kg 15-inch wheel, the all-composite wheel is predicted to provide efficiency gains of 5 – 10 % representing a 5% fuel saving or a 5% CO2 reduction when retrofitted to a petrol or diesel powered vehicle.

Over the next six months, the consortium – each of whom has an impressive automotive pedigree – will use the funding to move the all-composite wheel from proof of concept through to demonstration and production readiness.

Previously seen to be purely performance driven for racing and high-performance applications, lightweight carbon wheels are now being investigated by electric and niche vehicles and OEMs to further reduce fuel consumption, emissions, extend vehicle range and increase payload.

And with the wheel’s effectiveness set to be tested by two OEMs and a global Tier 1 wheel supplier – GKN, MeV and Microcab – there is clearly a lot of interest in this project from the automotive industry.

  • Bitrez attends special Queen’s Award reception at Buckingham Palace

Bitrez’s joint Managing Directors – Paul Jones and Brian Allen – attended the reception, which was hosted by His Royal Highness Charles, Prince of Wales and included representatives from 200 other winning businesses.

The Queen’s Award is the highest accolade in the UK for business success and was awarded to Bitrez for their development of Bisphenol A (BPA) free resins, Curaphen.

Not only do these Curaphen grades satisfy new regulations but they also meet the desirable processing and performance requirements of conventional BPA derivatives.

Bitrez’s exports have increased by 45 per cent in the past five years with a third of that coming from Curaphen. The company has also doubled its capacity and now runs a 24/7 operation to ensure it can meet increased volume requirements from the USA and China. To date Bitrez has sold over 800 tons of Curaphen which equates to millions of food and drink packaging been safely coated with BPA free resin every week.

Paul Jones, Managing Director, said: “It was an honour to have attended the event and to have met members of the Royal household. It is particularly rewarding for the Company to have been recognised in the innovation category.”

Bitrez has won a plethora of awards this year, including the Chemicals Northwest Awards for Manufacturer of the Year 2019.
