  • MarchantCain presents exciting developments in mechatronic components for low volume OEMs.

    Midlands mechatronics design and development company MarchantCain are planning another action-packed stand at this year's Advanced Engineering Show.

    In addition to examples of active aerodynamics presented in an extremely interesting and interactive way, there will be examples of their new window regulator design, specifically produced for low volume vehicle OEMs and a show-and-tell stand of how a beautiful bridge parapet was produced using many automotive engineering techniques. But what will probably steal the show is a concept personal drone, designed by local industrial design house, Smallfry, with engineering input from MarchantCain. All these products show how collaboration can produce some amazing results.

    MarchantCain is especially keen to demonstrate how its "whole business" approach to design and manufacture can help the lower volume, niche vehicle OEMs achieve the mechatronic components they are seeking for their new vehicles. Often these low volume OEMs struggle to get quotes for new components from the large tier 1 mass suppliers, but these smaller companies are specifically those that MC can help. Starting with their red book budget MC can work with the OEM to adjust several variables to match the OEM's requirements, both at the design and the manufacturing stages. Window regulators are a case in point; MarchantCain has designed and is now manufacturing new window regulators with revolutionary technology for a number of low volume OEMs.

    Having recently been designing all manner of electric vehicles, including a rather large drone, MC engineers were delighted to give Smallfry a hand with its concept of a personal transport drone. Whilst acknowledging that "Kev" is unlikely to leave the ground at the show, there are very real expectations that he could do so in the near future. Steve May-Russell, MD of Smallfry will be on hand to answer questions about "Kev's" future applications.

  • MarchantCain to showcase innovative window regulator technology at Advanced Engineering 2017

    Over the past decade, MarchantCain has earned a solid reputation for working with high profile automotive companies on window regulators. Now the company plans to take the technology one step further, showcasing their new window regulator design alongside pioneering work in active aerodynamics at the Advanced Engineering Exhibition at NEC Birmingham on the 1st and 2nd November.

    Window regulators are probably one of the most complex yet overlooked parts of any modern vehicle’s door system, particularly with more modern and sophisticated designs. Glass can be curved within one or more planes, meaning that its movement within the door when the regulator is activated must account for things like height, weight and curvature. It’s no easy task, but the experts at MarchantCain make the development of such regulators look easy.

    Window regulators are important functional components allowing the driver and passengers to access the outside world from a secure environment, such as roadside tolls to drive-through takeaways. When asked what kind of innovations the company is planning in the automotive industry, the company’s co-Founder Rob Marchant, said:

    “We’re really pushing the boundaries when it comes to automotive window regulators in particular. We’ve streamlined our manufacturing methods and are able to drastically improve whole vehicle life costs.”

    When it comes to supply and demand, cost is also a huge factor for many smaller entrepreneurial companies producing technically challenging vehicles in smaller numbers. MarchantCain’s latest innovations should open the market for these companies and give them more choice when it comes to procuring window regulators for their builds.

    “Low volume niche vehicles cannot hold the costs of the large 1st Tier suppliers. Thanks to our improved methods, we are able to come in with different frames for projected costs and delivery.”

    What’s more, the team has a long-standing interest in active aerodynamics - the art of increasing fuel efficiency and reducing drag on lightweight vehicles - which they’ll also be showcasing at November’s exhibition. Such technology will allow performance hybrid vehicles to overcome obstacles like heavy components and high speed instability while factoring in crosswinds on the fly. The team have already been working closely with Porsche in the implementation of active aerodynamics.

    MarchantCain have been in business since 2006 and are widely experienced in new product development and high end, low volume manufacturing. Many of the team will be present at the Advanced Engineering Exhibition 2017, the UK’s largest annual gathering of advanced engineering professionals.
