Oil Management – a sustainable resource
Lubrication and Hydraulic Oils are the lifeblood of many of our machines. How often have we changed the oil because it is dirty or contaminated. By cleaning the oil and removing all the viscose and varnish resins, as well as water and elemental debris, then we do not need to replace the oil. Oil can be cleaned and its life extended by a process involving Oil Cleaning and regular Oil analysis.
Andrew Thoms, Director, Triple R UK

Session 2 1130-1200
Pitfalls to Avoid in the Thermal Inspections of Electrical Installations
When performing electrical inspections using thermal imaging camera's, outdoors or indoors, it is very important to pay attention not only to the actual temperature of the fault detected but also to the working conditions (ratio actual load to nominal load) and the atmospheric conditions like wind speed and solar load. We will present that in fact a 10% change of the load can modify the measured temperature with a value much larger than 10% and different wind conditions can lead to very different measured results. Caution on the interpretation of results and complementary notes are necessary to avoid wrong decisions based on the measured temperature alone.
Jit Patel, Technical Sales Manager, Fluke UK Ltd

Session 3 1215-1245
Quick & Simple Condition Monitoring – maximise return on minimum investment.
In the present economic climate there can be a temptation to delay implementing Condition Monitoring. However simple approaches to Condition Monitoring enable many of its benefits and savings to be achieved quickly using existing personnel and a minimum investment of time and money. This learnshop describes further the practicalities of this cost-effective strategy.
Trevor Holroyd, Managing Director, Holroyd Instruments Ltd

Session 2 1200-1230
Developing a Maintenance Strategy
With so many alternative strategies (RCM, TPM, VDM, Lean), processes (FMEA, FTA, softRCA) and systems (CMMS, EAM, ERP), it is not surprising that the maintenance function has difficulty finding a way forward. This session will address the following:
What is a maintenance strategy and what benefits are there in following a coherent programme? How should technology developments impact on, and be incorporated into, a maintenance strategy? Where do planned and predictive maintenance fit into the strategy? How do you select the most appropriate strategy for your particular situation?
Geoff Walker, Director, Artesis
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Session 3 1245-1315
What about Maintenance Skills?
In the current climate the desire to be lean means that people need a wider range of skills. Asset management encompasses a vast number of techniques and principles which require a clear understanding in order to be effective. To produce the desired results manufacturers need a structured approach to maintenance training. In this session Peter will explain how a training framework (developed by MCP and NSA Food and Drink Manufacturing) can help deliver manufacturing excellence.
Peter Jackson, Consultant, MCP Consulting and Training
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Session 4 1330-1400
To See More, is to Know More - how many applications have you considered for thermal imaging?

Condition Monitoring is Changing the Role of the Electrical Technician
Gone are the days when a meg-ohm meter or a multi-meter were the main tools of the electrical technician. The art of condition monitoring is evolving into the 21st century with state-of-the-art technology. Routine portable test equipment is being replaced with continuous monitoring maintenance products that not only monitor machinery around the clock but can notify engineers anywhere in the world when an issue arises.

Session 2 1200-1230
A Case Study in Design-Out Using Vibration analysis
Following the overhaul of a thin gauge aluminium rolling mill, strip steering became a major quality issue that nearly crippled plant operation. Although site engineers thought that the problem related to a re-designed steering arm, it was the use of vibration analysis that proved critical in understanding how the problem had developed and how it should be resolved.
Nick Williams, Consultant Engineer, Advanced Maintenance Solutions Ltd

Session 3 1245-1315
Advances in Antimicrobial Protection for Food Grade Lubricants
The food industry presents some unique challenges – not least in the area of lubricants and lubrication. The demands of increasingly harsh operating environments coupled with stringent safety restrictions are tough challenges to overcome in keeping equipment performance levels high. A growing concern in food plants is microbial growth in lubricants, and this session will discuss advances in antimicrobial preservatives that protect lubricants from deterioration and fouling, thus helping to maintain them in effective operating condition while preventing them from becoming a potential source of contamination of food products.
Colleen Flanagan, Category Portfolio Manager – Specialty Fluids & Food Grade Lubricants, Petro-Canada Lubricants

Session 4 1330-1400
Understanding Maintenance Key Performance Indicators
What gets measured gets done. KPIs are an established business tool used to measure and improve effectiveness of maintenance programmes. This presentation discusses implementing and monitoring external and internal KPIs in line with best practice, including PAS 55 & BS EN 15341:2007, allowing management to manage – rather than react.

"Innovation is not absolutely necessary, but then again, neither is survival"
THE INNOVATION TOOL KIT (The University of Warwick 2002)
All maintenance teams face challenges of technology transfer on a day to day basis. Few can claim either high capability or the necessary skills in depth in this area. This suggests that the majority of Maintenance Managers would benefit greatly from the clarity of planning and the precision of deployment that can be brought about by using a structured approach to innovation and the introduction of new processes.
Lee Weatherly will be presenting parts of the work carried out in partnership with the University of Warwick around this topic. This work will enable the observer to firstly diagnose capability to support and promote innovation and secondly, to ensure that new technologies and processes are effectively implemented.
A presentaion from Lee Weatherly, CEO of Midland Group Training Services Ltd.
