SDU

Maximo upgrades with no downtime

Remove downtime for your Maximo upgrades with the SDU (SRO Dynamic Upgrader)

Overview

There are many benefits for upgrading to the latest version of Maximo but traditionally the process causes costly downtime that you want to avoid. Now, the SRO Dynamic Upgrader provides a flexible solution that removes downtime as well as offering additional benefits.

The SDU enables Maximo upgrades with no downtime, ensuring a practical and cost-effective upgrade process whilst allowing for rigorous testing and user acceptance.

The SDU enables an offline upgrade and migration process, running in parallel and capturing all changes made to the old version. Thereby allowing users to remain on the previous version during the entire upgrade process until the final cut-over to the new version, the only downtime being the time it takes for your users to log on to the new version.

Benefits of SDU

SDU is a flexible solution that provides many benefits including:

• Eliminates downtime to your live Maximo server - you can continue working as normal during the upgrade
• Allows for ‘offsite’ upgrade – can help to reduce project costs
• Allows for testing/training with 'live' data - operate a separate staging server for testing or simply a separate database where any testing and training can be completed without impact to the new live database
• Track all changes made to your production database during the upgrade - all supported changes are logged and stored
• Automatic and configurable e-mail notifications of any changes made – ensures support is notified If any errors occur during transfer
• Send changes from any point in time from change capture start date - reset any table to send its changes from current live to any point in time from when the solution began capturing changes (pre-upgrade)
• Synchronisation with flexible scheduling, running silently -no user input is needed unless you wish to stop or manually run the task
• Lightweight - minimal processing power required from your database and server
• Can also be used to synchronise your live data with development and test environments - can remove the need for backup/restore procedures to keep other Maximo systems up to date.

SDU utilises the current IBM upgrade process for Maximo to version 7.1 to keep any user configurations in place. This means that the resulting database schema is assured to be correct for the version of Maximo in use and subsequently fully supported by IBM.

How it works

As well as being dynamic for the upgrade process, SDU can also be utilised for prolonged durations where more rigorous testing for the upgraded database is required. Additionally, for organisations with remote Maximo installations it provides the option to upgrade the headquarters first, whilst enabling remote sites to remain on the previous version until their upgrade can be scheduled.

SDR

Secure and cost-effective data replication from SRO Solutions - the Data Experts

SRO understands the needs of customers when it comes to data replication. We have proven experience working with international companies who frequently encounter problems keeping remote sites up-to-date with essential data due to geographic remoteness and poor communication links.

The SRO Data Replicator (SDR) automatically replicates all, or part of your data, making it accessible and fully available across the organisation. Tried and tested with IBM Maximo, yet truly application independent, the SDR will revolutionise the use of all your SQL-based systems, not only data but also file attachments, allowing you to manage your disconnected remote sites and mobile workforce centrally from the office, regardless of latency or bandwidth.

Typical scenarios supported by the SDR include:

• Seaborne transportation
• Offshore oil and gas
• Cruise and ferry
• Military and government
• Specialist vessels
• Mobile and remote workforce

How it works

Users don’t have to be connected to a network to access their data. The SDR enables disconnected remote sites such as regional offices, ships, off-shore installations and remote laptop workers to obtain up to date information at anytime with the same quality of service levels, optimised performance, and lower management costs as those in the corporate office.

Fully optimised for use over low bandwidth, high latency satellite connections such as Inmarsat and VSAT, the SDR also works efficiently with GPRS and 3G connections, offering a more dependable and robust 'session' based replication solution.

Superior replication of data cross your sites
The SDR supports true asynchronous update everywhere replication and, as opposed to less efficient message-based or synchronous replication, does not rely on e-mail or FTP and does not require all sites to be available at the same time for replication to take place.

All distributed databases are synchronised transparently with the central servers, making deployment and support of your distributed applications as cost effective as Web-based applications but without the network limitations associated with accessing a centralised server and database.

Proven Technology

Highly scalable and as easy to deploy to two sites as it is to hundreds, the SDR is based on the unique patented technology of Progress Software Corporation (PSC). Working seamlessly and automatically giving you the potential to deal with almost any configuration, using its bi-directional update-everywhere model and fully automated flexible replication scheduler, enabling authorised administrators to manage the entire network from any of your sites.

Currently Supported Platforms for the SDR include: Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and DB2.

Features at a glance

• Bi-directional, ‘update anywhere’ replication
o There is no notion of ‘master/slave’
• Flexible, scalable replication topologies
o Supports peer-to-peer, hub & spoke, multi-tiered
• Collision Avoidance Method (patented)
o Horizontal (work sets), vertical (fragments)
o collisions fully logged, along with data
• Dynamic Data Slicing
o remote sites only receive pertinent data
• Heterogeneous database support
o E.g.: from Oracle to MS SQL Server
• Automatic data compression
o ensures minimal bandwidth usage
• Secure with data encryption
o uses industry-standard, government-endorsed Triple-DES, SHA, and ECC security algorithms
• Advanced scheduling
o optimises network efficiency and security
• Internet standard
o TCP/IP ports 242 and 2584.
• Robust session recovery - 'make-on-break'
o If a replication session is interrupted, the next session continues where the previous session stopped.
• File / Attachment replication
o Associated images and documents can be replicated at same time as data

Organisations that use SDR

The SDR is a tried and tested solution that has been implemented by many different types of organisations. SRO Solutions also offer a comprehensive service including: software supply, design & specification, implementation, training and support.

Organisations that are currently benefiting from the SDR include:

BG Energy – Trinidad

BG Energy had been experiencing difficulties with Maximo on one of its offshore production platforms due to high VSAT latency and poor system response times. After implementing the SDR massive improvements were realised offshore and now Maximo is being used with no performance issues.

Atlantic Oilfield Services Ltd (AOS)

AOS operate various offshore drilling rigs and offshore vessels and have offices in Holland and U.A.E. The SDR was selected to enhance Maximo performance across the fleet and provide a replication network between the various disconnected sites and other offices, initially for three rigs and the Amsterdam office but since expanded to 9 remote sites.

Chevron Shipping Corp.

After extensive testing , proof of concept and pilot, CSC selected the SDR for its fleet Maximo roll-out for 23 tankers.

Petro Vietnam Drilling

The SDR was initially implemented on 1 drilling rig and an office in Vietnam and, based on this initial success, subsequently expanded to cover a total of 3 rigs and their Ho-Chi-Minh City offices in 2009.

GNV (Grande Navi Veloci)

SRO was contracted via IBM GBS Italia to deliver the SDR for 8 modern ocean going ferries and GNV's office in Genoa, Italy.

Press releases

  • Getting more out of your assets

Although we are being bombarded almost daily with bad news about the economy, there are still companies that are going from strength-to-strength as Manchester based SRO Solutions recently highlighted. Steve Driver, director at SRO explained, “The last 12 months have seen rapid growth for us. Not only have we taken on new staff in all parts of the company, but we have had to move to larger premises to cope with the increased demand for our asset management solutions based around IBM Maximo.

“With money being so tight, organisations are looking towards getting the maximum return from their investment in plant, machinery and other assets. This is where a mature and cost-effective asset management solution like Maximo can really make the difference - even for smaller companies.

Automating maintenance processes to improve productivity and reduce downtime

“Over the past 12 months we have implemented Maximo in many different types of organisation ranging from small manufacturing companies through to multi-national shipping giants. Irrespective of size or location they have all experienced reduced downtime and improved productivity, vital factors in ensuring continued success in the troubled economic climate.”

SRO’s consultants have got to visit many parts of the globe in the last year from Canada to Malaysia and Aberdeen to Los Angeles. Their skills have been invaluable to organisations wishing to get the most out of their Maximo asset management solution, and Steve believes this trend is only going to continue.

“An organisation can make significant savings by maximising the return on their existing assets. An integrated and sophisticated asset management solution like Maximo automates the processes surrounding routine and one-off maintenance tasks, helping to ensure maximum uptime and profitability.

“This is important at any time, but particularly with the current world economy. We can already see from the increased number of enquiries we are receiving that organisations are waking up to this fact and we believe that Maintec 2012 will be really busy for us.”

  • Maximo users save money by attending Maintec 2013

To coincide with their exhibiting at the 38th annual Maintec, from 5th March to 7th March 2013, SRO Solutions today announced a number of special offers that will be of particular interest to IBM Maximo users, as Keith Bostock of SRO explained.

“IBM Maximo is a world class asset management solution used by many organisations across the globe but, like any software investment, it requires professional, reliable support and effective training to ensure the return on investment is optimised”.

“From experience, SRO knows only too well the importance of support and training but also understand the financial pressures upon customers today, that is why we will be offering Maximo users at Maintec 2013 a number of special offers that can only save them money. These include; training 3 people for the price of 2, guaranteeing to beat the cost of their existing Maximo support from their current supplier and free use of the SDU Maximo upgrade tool that delivers ‘no-downtime’ Maximo upgrades.

“We believe these offers will be very popular and, as they are limited in number, will be quickly snapped up by Maximo users at the show. So we are urging any Maximo users who are planning to attend Maintec 2013 to visit us at stand C23 as soon as they arrive to make sure they don’t miss out.”
