    ADVANCES GUIDED WAVE RADAR TECHNOLOGY
Magnetrol’s new GWR solution offers improved level control performance

Downers Grove, IL, USA (November 11, 2012) – Magnetrol International, Incorporated has launched the ECLIPSE Model 706 guided wave radar (GWR) transmitter, a best-in-class level control solution that advances guided wave radar technology with improved performance for a wide range of level and interface control applications.

The ECLIPSE Model 706 is designed to provide outstanding accuracy, reliability and safety for virtually all process industries. Latest-generation features include:

Enhanced Signal Performance – The ECLIPSE Model 706 innovative GWR circuitry achieves both a higher transmit pulse amplitude and improved receiver sensitivity, resulting in a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) that is nearly 300% higher than competitive GWR devices. This assures precise, dependable control for every level application, including extremely low dielectric media, extended measuring ranges, and punishing conditions where foaming, boiling or flashing can occur.

Overfill Capable Probes – Magnetrol offers the only guided wave radar transmitter on the market with a complete line of overfill capable probes. Unlike other GWR transmitters that use algorithms to infer level readings in top-of-the-probe dead zones, the ECLIPSE Model 706 measures true level to within specification all the way up to the process flange. Coaxial and single rod overfill capable probes can be installed in various configurations on the vessel, even when the risk of flooding exists.

  • Eclipse®705 receives SIL3 - certificate from exida

To what extend can a process be expected to perform safely? And in the event of a failure, to what extend can the process be expected to fail safely? These questions are answered through the assignment of a target Safety Integrity Level. SIL ratings measure the safety risk of a given process.
The higher the SIL level, the greater the impact of a failure and the lower the failure rate that is acceptable. Assigning a SIL level is thus based on the amount of risk reduction that is necessary and/or requested to maintain risk at an acceptable level.
To determine SIL in the process industry, one needs to consider the entire control loop. In order to be able to do so each device in this loop needs to have a safe failure fraction, one of the important device factors that needs to be calculated. It will be the total of all these different values that determines the obtained SIL level.
More than thirteen years ago, Magnetrol® was the first to introduce the two-wire guided wave radar to the marketplace. Now Eclipse®705 has received the exida certificate for a “SIL 3 Capable” device according to the IEC61508 : 2000 Parts 1-7. This means in practice that combining two devices in a 1oo2 set-up is in line with SIL 3 loop requirements. We like to put emphasis on” loop requirements” since it has to do with an entire installation, not only one device.
In addition to this SIL rating we also have several agency approvals (e.g. ATEX, Lloyds, TÜV, FM/CSA,…) for Magnetrol’s Eclipse®705

  • Thermatel® TA2 Thermal Mass Flow Meter Measures Greenhouse Gas

Magnetrol International announces that their Thermatel Model TA2 Thermal Mass Flow Meter measures greenhouse gases in accordance with the new US Environmental Protection Agency rule (EPA 40 CFR part 98). This new mandate requires companies emitting more than 25.000 tons/year of CO2 equivalent to report greenhouse gas emissions effective January 1, 2010.
The Magnetrol Model TA2’s thermal dispersion technology provides an accurate and economical method to measure the amount of emitted methane or natural gas, and assesses emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), meeting the EPA requirements.

Magnetrol’s TA2 is a direct mass flow measuring instrument and requires only a simple, single insertion point into a pipe or stack to install. The accuracy is better than ±1% of reading +0,5% of calibrated full scale and exceeds the stated acceptable accuracy within this new EPA rule. Instruments are available for installation in line sizes from 15 mm up to more than 3000 mm. It operates over a wide flow range from 0,13 to 200 Nm/s with an exceptionally wide turndown ratio up to 100:1.
The flow sensing element of the Model TA2 is manufactured with all-welded construction and available in 316/316L or Hastelloy C. There is virtually no pressure drop when using a thermal mass flow meter and it has no moving parts and is, therefore, less sensitive for clogging and fouling. The instrument measures and displays mass flow rate, totalized flow and temperature with electronic output of passive and active 4-20mA signal including HART® protocol. Actual gas calibration will be performed on each TA2, matched to the customer application and installation conditions.

There are several flow measurement technologies that can be used for the measurement of greenhouse gases. However, thermal dispersion mass flow meters provide certain advantages in terms of mass flow measurement, turndown, (low) flow sensitivity, low pressure drop, and ease in installation. In fact, the TA2 thermal mass flow meter will provide the lowest cost of ownership for facilities that are required to measure the greenhouse gas emissions from their processes to comply with this new EPA requirement.

  • First overfill-safe Eclipse® Model 705 GWR probe for dirty liquids completes the first heavy-duty offering for Guided Wave Radar

The Eclipse Caged probe is designed for heavy-duty use on hydrocarbons with extreme viscosity up to 10.000 cP. The caged probe appears like a single rod GWR probe but performs identical to a coaxial-style GWR probe. Once installed in the appropriate cage, the 7MG is a coaxial GWR probe with full mounting flexibility and mechanical overfill safety.

The 7MG is different from any other GWR probe on the market today. It re-uses existing bypass cages, stillwells or bridles as the outer tube of a normal coaxial design. The 7MG is adapted in design to meet the 2”, 3” or 4” Ø size of the cage it will be operating in. A special adaption piece assures the perfect impedance alignment with the characteristic impedance of the newly formed coax style GWR probe.

The heavy-duty industries want fewer probe choices. These choices must provide safe solutions and reduce downtime during maintenance. The new “Heavy-Duty Guided Wave Radar 7MG Probe” meets this criteria. The new offering includes heavy duty GWR probes that in line with the amplifier serve level, volume and interface with one single configuration, are designed to be used in clean and dirty liquids and are mechanically overfill safe. Mechanical overfill safety allows measurement up to the process flange and guarantees no loss of signal by mechanical design instead of relying on software algorithms that some suppliers are forced to use.

Ten years ago, Magnetrol’s Eclipse 705 was the first 2-wire loop-powered Guided Wave Radar transmitter (or device) on the market. Since then, Magnetrol has re-stated its leadership by once again being first in the industry to add new capabilities to Guided Wave Radar — a heavy-duty offering and the new caged 7MG probe.

The Eclipse 705 handles temperatures from -196° up to +430° C, pressures from full vacuum up to 430 bar, liquefied gases with very low dielectrics up to water-based liquids and saturated steam applications for high pressure steam drums up to 155 bar.

  • E3 Electronic Modulevel® First Configurable Displacer Transmitter on the Market

The modernized, digital E3 Modulevel® from Magnetrol is an advanced, intrinsically safe two-wire instrument utilizing simple buoyancy principle to detect and convert liquid level changes into a stable output signal. The new E3 Modulevel has modernized packaging, increased functionality, diagnostics, and the capability to configure rather than calibrate the transmitter. The E3 Modulevel supports FOUNDATION fieldbusTM, HART®, AMS, FDT/PACTware™ communication protocols.

While the cast iron enclosure used on the previous electronic Modulevel design was large and unwieldy, the adapted dual-compartment Eclipse® enclosure used on the E3 is modern, light-weight and ergonomic. This enclosure contains the wiring, analog and digital boards. The LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) is housed separately adjacent to the enclosure and the two are joined by our flame path adaptor. The complete, explosion proof housing assembly is offered in both cast aluminum and stainless steel.

The E3 Modulevel is the only displacer transmitter on the market with a SFF of 92.3% making it suitable for SIL2 safety loops. The additional diagnostic tools allow the user to integrate this transmitter into highly demanding safety instrument loops (Exida endorsed).
The E3 withstands process temperatures and pressures up to +315 °C / 355 bar, handles liquids with an S.G. as low as 0.23 and up to 2.2, and liquid/liquid interfaces with a minimum density difference of 0.10 kg/dm³. By simply entering 2 process variables (temperature and S.G.) the E3 Modulevel is ready for service.

Unlike the traditional torque tube design, the E3 Modulevel uses a precision range spring. The spring reduces the friction of moving parts (only one linear motion) and provides natural damping. The result is a more reliable and stable output even when the liquid surface is turbulent. Because an LVDT offers twice the travel of a typical RVDT (Rotatable Variable Differential Transformer), the accuracy/linearity of a spring-operated displacer transmitter is superior to traditional torque tube designs.

The new E3 Modulevel displacer transmitter offers high reliability and expanded features which are sure to enhance it already immense popularity on offshore platforms, in petrochemical facilities and in power stations worldwide.

  • Eclipse® 705 level transmitter, European type approved on steam drums

The second generation Eclipse 705, 2-wire Guided Wave Radar of Magnetrol is type approved to the newest European norms for steam drums, EN 12952-11 (water tube boilers) and EN 12953-9 (shell type boilers) as “primary safety ” and “secondary safety” device. These norms complete the PED construction guidelines with functional directives, typical for use on steam drums. The Eclipse 705 has been type approved by the Dutch “Stoomwezen”, for use on steam drums as a secondary safety device since 2002. As a secondary safety device, Eclipse fulfills all general control functions on the steam drum; such as the controlling of the hot feed water to the boiler. In its function of ‘primary safety’ device, Eclipse operates as a safety switch and turns off the boiler in a safe way in case an emergency / dangerous situation occurs. The number of primary and secondary safety devices on a steam drum depends on the type of boiler, the manning of the boiler (permanently manned, semi-manned or not manned at all), its process pressure, capacity, etc ….

The Eclipse 705 combines two major advantages against the traditionally used transmitters; high reliability – repeatability and an efficient process seal. The Eclipse uses the technology of Guided Wave Radar. This measuring principle measures independently of the process parameters such as density, conductivity, dielectrics, pH, etc. High pressure and temperature changes inside a boiler have an important impact on the accuracy and reliability of the traditional transmitters such as differential pressure, displacer and RF capacitance. The process seal of the 7MS probe is specifically designed for use on saturated steam. The dynamics of the seal take the sudden and aggressive changes of process pressure and temperature into account.

The Eclipse 705 with 7MS probe resists a process pressure of 155 bar at an equivalent temperature of +345°C in saturated steam applications. For non-steam applications, Eclipse can be used on process conditions from –196°C up to +430°C / full vacuum up to 430 bar. The Eclipse 705 transmitter can be configured for both measuring level and liquid-liquid interface in level units or volume units.

The Eclipse 705 is also available with a SIL2 version. The additional diagnostic tools allow the user to integrate this transmitter within high demanding safety instrument loops. With a SFF (Safe Failure Fraction) of 91%, Eclipse is the only TDR transmitter on the market that scores as high on safety level. The Eclipse 705 (with enhanced SIL electronics) is suitable for SIL2 loops as 1oo1 device (hardware fault tolerance 0 – FMEDA analyzed by Exida per IEC 61508).

    The Eclipse 705 disposes of Fieldbus®, AMS® ,Hart®, FDT®/PACTware® communication.
