The integration of different technologies has become standard in all technical markets. In the engineering world, engineers are working on designs via Collaborative Engineering, or variants thereof.

In production, for example, MES systems bridge the gap between the shop floor and the office with the ERP system. Mechanical and system engineers use open network standards and fieldbuses to enable multi-vendor components and control systems to communicate with each other.

The industrial user clearly wants to move away from automation islands, regardless of whether process installations, production lines or machines are involved.
