The role of Nutraceuticals in Skin Health & Anti-Ageing

A move towards a skin-centric approach in cosmetic practice is essential for improved patient education and may also benefit practice progression. Lifestyle management (stress, exercise and diet) and a matrix of bespoke skin health interventions now enhance existing injectable offerings.
We have seen a massive development in cosmeceuticals and nutraceuticals over the last few years and these represent a fascinating and evolving area of cosmetic medicine and add further value to our skin health armamentarium.
This presentation will  explore the emerging role, scientific evidence and popularity of nutraceuticals and their relevance in skin health and anti-ageing bespoke treatment programmes.

Biofibre: safe artificial hair implantation for hair loss conditions

After decades of research and technical improvement, biocompatible hair implantation has never been safer. The hair implantation technique first started in the 70's and many of the treatments during that time were carried out by unskilled practitioners using unsafe material with no scientific approval. However, that was then, research has come a long way since that time with numerous clinical studies run, certifications approved and a 1000s of case studies completed with successful results achieved. Biofibre is an artificial hair inert that is well tolerated by the human body, it is manufactured in conformity with ISO GMP and GLP norms, with FDA authorised polyamides and pigments. Biofibre Hair Implantation can be used solo or in combination with other hair restoration treatments, like FUE and FUT. All fibres are available in different colours, texture (wavy, straight, curly and afro) and lengths so it can be blended with your patient's real hair for a natural aesthetic result. Attend this lecture and get involved with hair loss intervention through safe artificial hair implantation.

Cysteamine as a new skin depigmenting agent: 4 years of experience and 40 years of medical literature

Dr. Behrooz Kasraee, Scientis Pharma

Dr. B. Kasraee is a well-known researcher in the field of skin pigmentation. He has discovered several new skin depigmenting agents in the past few years, has introduced new methods for the measurement of organelle transfer between melanocytes and keratinocytes, and has new hypotheses regarding hydrogen peroxide mediated melanin synthesis and its role in reducing oxidative stress in mammalian cells. The company under his direction in Switzerland, Scientis Pharma SA, has recently introduced a new skin depigmenting product, the "Cysteamine cream". The high efficacy and safety profiles of this product makes it a serious candidate to replace depigmenting agents such as hydroquinone and its derivatives.

Confocal microscopy: A window into the skin

Confocal laser scanning microscopy makes it possible to view different skin structures, in cellular resolution, without the need for invasive biopsies.  Clinicians, patients and cosmetic research companies can see the underlying effects of skin treatments and measure their effectiveness against benchmark criteria.  In-vivo examinations of the epidermal and dermal layers are pain free, with no tissue extraction necessary, with results that are available instantly.

In addition to the in-vivo devices, the ex-vivo device is increasingly being used in reconstructive surgery, as well as in MOHS surgery.  Immediate analysis of excised tissue is possible, to control the margins between pathogenic and healthy tissue, and enable a greater number of patients to be treated per theatre session.

Confocal laser scanning microscopy is widely used throughout Europe and now, with reimbursement codes, the USA.  An increasing number of possible applications are being seen in the UK in cosmetic research and clinical / reconstructive diagnosis and surgery.

Growth Factors: harnessing healing power, from restoration to rejuvenation

Ahmed Al-Qahtani, assistant professor,  College of medicine and health sciences in the UAE University & president, AQ Skin Solutions Inc

Since the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) in 1986, scientists and physicians alike have sought to understand and apply the physiological benefits of     growth factors. In both healing and rejuvenation, tissue remodeling and systemic restoration, strides have been made in this regard. While the activity of growth factors and other elements of the cell secretome in response to acute wound damage are becoming increasingly well known, it remains a novelty to many that similar principles of restoration and remodeling repair can be employed for the sake of cosmeceutical rejuvenation. Within this domain, topical serums containing an intricate balance of growth factors, cytokines and other peptides have proven effective in reversing the signs of extrinsic aging. Perhaps the most effective of these serums include those engineered and patented (U.S. Pat. 8,518,819) by AQ Skin Solutions. This study corroborates the idea that the topical application of growth factors and cytokines are beneficial in reducing the signs of skin aging of the face, including the area around the eyes. Moreover, growth factors have been shown to restore hair growth and slow down the progression of Androgenetic alopecia.
Our study established the effectiveness of naturally occurring growth factors for anti-aging, skin rejuvenation, wound healing and for the first time in the treatment of hair loss.

Growth Factors for Hair Restoration

Dana Lin, David Angeloni, Abdelrahman Ibrahim, and Ahmed Al-Qahtani,
United Arab Emirates University, College of Medicine and Health sciences. Al-Ain, UAE AQ Skin Solutions Inc. California, USA

The pathogenesis of hair loss is well defined; it is characterized by a decrease in hair synthesis and an increase in follicle breakdown, mediated by metalloproteinase’s. This net loss in hair volume and production is believed to contribute to and/or Alopecia.  Biologic factors that are involved in wound healing might provide benefits for hair loss.  Accordingly, growth factors, peptide fragments, and other biologically active molecules are being incorporated into anti-hair loss cosmeceuticals. Growth factors are typically peptides with diverse biological effects.  Some growth factor families that have been identified as useful in wound healing and/or epidermal remodeling include, e.g., transforming growth factor- ß (TGF- ß), epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and fibroblast growth factors (FGFs). This study corroborates the idea that the topical application of growth factors and cytokines are beneficial in reducing hair loss and promoting hair re-growth. Moreover, growth factors have been shown to restore hair growth and slow down the progression of Androgenetic alopecia.  Our study established the effectiveness of naturally occurring growth factors for the first time in the treatment of hair loss.
