WiForce- Wireless force measurement in machining
In the domain of high end manufacturing processes such as machining in aero engine, energy systems, oil and gas, bearing systems, and medical machining, it is well recognised that the ability to “feel” what the cutting tool is doing to the component is a critical to quality, eliminating breakage, optimising tool life, detecting chatter and deflection. However up to now techniques to “feel” what is happening at the cutting edge have limitation in cost, sensitivity or access.
WiForce overcomes these limitations using a wireless passive strain based approach as illustrated in the figure below. The underlying concept of WiForce is to make standard cutting tools into “smart” cutting tools.
