About Dortmund and the region Dortmund is the largest city in the German region of Westphalia (Westfalen) and lies in the geographic centre of the state of North-Rhine Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen). Internationally it is perhaps even more well known as the largest city in the metropolitan region of the Ruhr, the industrial heartland of Germany. There are some nine million people within a radius of 50 kilometers, comparable with the Greater London or Paris-Ile de France regions. And within a radius of 100 km there are some 18 million people, making the Ruhrgebiet one of the most densely populated regions of Europe.
In terms of economic output and population, North Rhine-Westphalia is Germany's largest state. It generates 21.9% of German GDP and 18.2% of exports. It also has huge spending power (€ 283 billion per annum).
