How to overcome Supply Chain complexity by using Information-on-demand services

In general, these players don't have the same level of IT expertise and they need different applications to comply with their role. Nevertheless, re-use of information and collaborative Supply Management can lead to Integrated Visibility and easier compliance with governmental rules and regulations. It is especially important that the users receive relevant and appropriate information, that they can easily assimilate and that enables them to make the right decisions in a more efficient way.

Eric Duchesne, Competence Center Manager - Porthus n.v.

Case study Dicogel

How to implement a system controlling both manufacturing and warehousing operations? Dicogel producer of frozen foods decided recently to integrate its job floor requirements in a proven software system.  The system had to encompass both the warehouses and the factory. The presentation will lead the audience through the objectives of the project, how it went and what is obtained.  Furthermore, the speaker will give some tips and common pitfalls of implementing an WMS and MES system.

Warehousing conquers the factory

As product mixes expand, and production processes reach their efficiency limits (or get relocated), in-plant logistics emerges as the next area for chasing profits in factories. Getting components from their sourcing location all the way to the assembly line requires a multitude of process steps, that are primarily handling, transportation, sorting, counting and administration. Since the added value from these processes is very small, and their cost impressive, factories will have to start organizing them more efficiently. The speaker will argue that borrowing from the warehousing and distribution centers operational experiences is a first step, but not enough. Analysis tools and theories are needed to support making meaningful decisions, and these tools need to be adapted to the manufacturing environment. The speaker will demonstrate these issues with practical examples from local companies and also indicate future developments that his department will undertake in this area.

The IBBT project MULTITR@NS - key toward CO-MODALITY

In the "integrated intelligent logistics chain" the exchange of information about freight enables the creation of ADDED VALUE.  Herein ICT plays an important role.  In the IBBT research project MULTITR@NS a unique concept was developed and demonstrated in a multimodal logistics environment.  By means of a SOA architecture existing ERP and WMS systems share information on the basis of role patterns.  Also the use of RFID as IDENTIFIER in a SOA network fits perfectly in this setting.  Furthermore the project has performed excellent work about multimodal routing, networks of active RFID and the use of agent technology, on the road towards Co-Modality.

André De Vleeschouwer, Program Manager - IBBT

Multi-site, multi flow transport planning optimisation at SK Cartomills

SK Cartomills, a subsidiary of the Smurfit Kappa Group, world leader in board packaging and products, operates 4 production and converting sites throughout Belgium. Due to production specialization and production constraints, each site is delivering its production throughout Benelux and France. Through this project, SK Cartomills has deployed a solution enabling it to significantly reduce its transport costs by optimizing the sequencing of transport orders from each site and grouping orders from different sites together. This solution is based on a central organization with a global view on the flows from all the sites but gives each site a certain degree of freedom to adapt the global plan. Both client deliveries and internal flows are taken into account and a pre-optimization of load volumes of all goods for a client is realized. Finally, the cost optimization takes into account the possibility for SK Cartomills’ transport firms to find, in certain cases, return loads from other clients.

Olivier Descamps, Supply Chain Manager - Smurfit Kappa Cartomills
